Hey James, this week I am working on the most exciting project ever – I am designing a new website for one of the most popular radio stations.

That was the last time I heard anything from my friend.

Now he is spending a big chunk of his time going through a lot of legal actions and a local lawyer has become his best mate.

Well, all just because my friend has been sued by a huge web design and development agency.

He hoped to get away with getting inspired from a website this agency had created (more or less, he literally copied nearly half of the website, doh!).

His excuse? Apparently he was lacking creativity!

After all, I did not hesitate to call him a fool!

He failed in his life big time, only by avoiding small, yet important steps.

If I were you, I would begin to worry right now, because you can fail too, just like my friend did!


To avoid becoming a fool because of the lack of creativity, you better learn how simple super-foods can boost your brainpower, which will, without a doubt, increase your, in web design, so needed creativity (I guarantee!).

Surely you would agree with me if I said that no one really likes to be controlled, do You?

More likely you would say – No!

Or you would shout at me, “James are you crazy, or what? Why would I like to be controlled!”

Well, neither do I…

But the painful truth, my friend is, that unfortunately we are being controlled. Even more surprisingly – controlled every single day.

And if we ever wanted to escape from being controlled by this beast, we would undoubtedly die!

Yes, we would die, because this controlling beast I am talking about is called FOOD. It controls how we feel every day. How productive we are, how powerful, fast, alert and creative we are.

Too much coffee will make you hyperactive, having some tofu frozen dessert will make you sleepy, whereas ice cream just before bed will ruin your sleep.

We simply cannot escape from it, but what we can do instead is take this control in our own hands.

I know, it sounds a bit crazy, but we can actually use food as a tool to make us feel more energized, to boost our powers of concentration as well as lift our moods.

Now I will reveal to you one of my biggest secrets.

This is one of the secrets that help me stay so creative, that I can proudly write an article so great, that people would read it again and again (shhh… it’s the one you’re reading right now.)

My secret consists of 10 basic superfoods, my kitchen, my own mouth and willingness to be more creative.

1. So Many Berries Out there, Go And Eat Them All

This fleshy fruit is usually very juicy, sweet or sometimes sour and is brightly coloured.

Berries are very rich in antioxidants, not only will they boost your brainpower to ensure you become more creative, but they will also improve your mental function and reverse age related issues.

And just to let you know this is not me making up some crazy story about how awesome berries are.

It is actually scientifically proven, that eating strawberries, blackberries, blueberries, and well, mainly any sort of berries does have very beneficial effects on your brain.

And guess what!? I bet you had no idea, that tomato is actually also classified as a berry. So if you prefer tomatoes than blueberries, blackberries or strawberries, it will still count.

2. Dark Chocolate, The Darker, The Better

Of course, as everyone of us know (or maybe not) chocolate is made from plants. So what does that mean now? You might ask.

Nothing much, to be honest…only thing is, that since it is made from plants, chocolate contains many of the health benefits of dark vegetables.

Not a big deal, is it?!
Well, yes it is. Hell of a big deal, if you asked me.

This sweet treat contains almost eight times the antioxidants found in strawberries.

Just remember not to wash your chocolate down with a glass of milk, as you would more likely end up taking all the antioxidant goodness away from your body, by preventing proper absorption.

3. Nuts Are Rich With Great Nutrients To Boost Your Brainpower

They are very rich in a wide array of great nutrients, including magnesium, fiber, zinc, sodium and unsaturated fat.

Every day I manage to snack on nuts like pecans, peanuts, walnuts, hazelnuts and others.

I, myself, started consuming a variety of nuts once I found out that they can help fight insomnia, promoting mental clarity, strong memory and boosting brainpower to become more creative.

My all time favourite ones are Omega-3 rich walnuts and almonds, which are packed with natural mood-enhancing neurotransmitters (don’t bother to pronounce it).

Mixed nuts can also be good for those, who are on a low-carbohydrate diet, as they provide just 7g of carbs in each 1 oz. Sounds great to me!

Those three letters are a type of Omega-3 fatty acid and this acid is the primary building block of the brain.

DHA cannot be produced by the body, so the only way to get it is from consumption of food like salmon.

      • Thanks James, i really appreciate your comments about my site and work.

        Just the usual creaks and groans in the joints. These are improving since I began stretching and lightly exercising again. This is due to my time in the ‘zone’ lasting up to 13 odd hours at times… where I realise I have not moved from my chair the entire time.

        I suffer from eye strain, tension headaches and a sever pain in my shoulder that comes from sitting with poor posture for a long time. Ironically, it was when I tried to improve my posture through a conscious effort of sitting up straight that brought the pain on.

        I have been seening an osteopath and I am on the path to recovery. Now my posture is vastly improved and the pain is subsiding slowly, but its taken nearly a year to readjust myself. Waking up every morning is still a painful experience.

        My main problem is my lethargy. It’s a constant “dullness” in my forehead. Hence why I am trying now to improve my diet. Based on your blog, I am already implementing changes. (Am even having a crack at making that Pan Seared Salmon tonight!).

        Not wanting to sound too melodramatic, I feel like someone who is fighting to wake up from a 100 year-long sleep and reclaim his life! hahaha

Now I know why I face art block everyday, you know you want to draw or design something but you just cant come up with even a simple design and it is just so frustrating! LOL

      I can answer You question based on my own experience.
      Basically I tend to eat eggs at least every second day.

      But avoid to eat egg yolks as they may block your stomach.
      And eating too much of egg yolks wouldn’t make You feel good either.

      So let’s say if I have 4 eggs, then I have 1 with egg yolk and 3 just egg whites.

    So it really is all about mind, body and sole when working on great design. I must admit I do tend to find eating right and working in the right environment do make a big impact. I recently switched offices whilst making my website and actually inadvertently changed my diet (because we had some very health conscience shops down stairs) and actually I think it did make an impact!

    In the moment I read the article title… just stopped and thought “that totally makes sense”!

    Here in Brazil, is very handy to got lots of fruits and vegetables… but I always go to the easy way: bananas and apples.

    Morning breakfast? No… just a cup of coffee and Im done. Sadly.. yes. But I’ve read of all your article which echoed like an alarm. “HEY its time to pay attention on what I am eating/drinking”.

    Another thing that I noticed is: avoid eating lots of pounds at lunch… it makes me feel very lazy! Having more than 3 deals on a day would be better – snacking along the day shoud by fine. Dr. Life has some tips about
    eating habits that seems OK to me…

          It’s very easy – Pour some milk in a bowl, put mixed berries in top it up with honey.

    I’m gonna start getting the regular packs of oatmeal (Krasdale brand), and use honey to sweeten it up. Then top it with blue berries and sliced banana. Gonna try it this morning!

      I would also suggest myself a good bowl of oatmeal porridge.

      Whenever I talk about breakfasts the last thing I recommend is definitely processed and sweetened cereal.

      So when I read, that You are going to use honey to sweeten your breakfast naturally I knew…

      And having berries and banana with it will just make it all taste ten times better.

      • Oh yeah, I’ve made it a happen to eat a bowl of cereal or oatmeal with sliced banana and blue berries. I’ve got so much more energy now, I feel good. I’ll eat that every morning, I also eat an apple/orange later on in the day too.

        Next weak I might make salmon with some butter/herd type sauce.

          • I love seafood. Crabs, shrimp, lobster, fish. I just buy it less, because it’s expensive. But I will be buying more seafood, no doubt.

            Salmon is my favorite. I hate whitings, had way too many in my life. =P

            Other fish I like are blue fish and trout/red snapper in particular, flounder isn’t bad either.

            But I genuinely love salmon, as much as the best mouth watering steak.

      I have been reading about egg yolks quite a bit already and there really are two different groups of people.

      One agrees with egg yolks harmfulness, the other with egg yolks not being bad at all.

      Unfortunately I cannot provide You guys which statement is right and which one is wrong.
      I can’t just because I’m not entitled to, as I’m not a nutritionist but just a regular consumer, just like You.

      The only thing I can say is what I learned from my own experience.

      So Cassi, let me ask You how many eggs, with all the egg yolks in them do You eat a week?
      And do You not feel like eating too many of them blocks Your stomach?

        I eat 1 – 2 full eggs every day. I find the protein/fat keeps me full and energized much longer through out the morning as opposed to cereal or oatmeal. I know not everyone’s bodies work the same, but I’ve found eggs for breakfast work well for me. :)

  10. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this wonderful article, James! I’ve been a vegetarian for more than 20 years, but that doesn’t automatically mean I’m a health nut. Far from it, actually. I’ve been neglecting my fruits and veggies lately and REALLY feel a difference in my overall demeanor, so there has to be a correlation. I know what I’m doing after work…going out and buying tons of raw broccoli (which I actually love the taste of), berries, spinach, avocado, nuts, and tomatoes! :)

      • Veganism is TOUGH. I tried it twice: once for 2 years and once for about 6 months. Cheese is the hardest to give up (soy cheese just doesn’t cut it) but I’d say that dining out is the biggest challenge for vegans. You wouldn’t believe how many dishes have milk or egg in them!

        My favorite greens recipe? I don’t really have one. I like my greens raw for the most part! However, seitan is my favorite vegetarian dish to make. Have you ever had seitan? It’s magically delicious. :)

          One of my friends is vegetarian and one of them is also vegan.
          Whenever we go out to have a meal they certainly do struggle to order something.

          There are so few places that do special vegan or vegetarian menus.

    I use that website when seeking out new fruits and stuff.

    I not too long ago started changing my diet. I mainly started eating fruits every day (because they are loaded with vitamins, minerals, and nutrients) and my core fruits are: apples, bananas, oranges, and blue berries. I have alternate fruits such as: pineapple, papaya, strawberries, etc.

    I also am eating more veggies and some nuts as well. Salmon is hardly cheap, but I’ll be getting some soon (it’s my favorite fish!).

    I didn’t realize chocolate was that healthy, though I knew coffee had some benefits. I wasn’t sure whether or not it was actually safe to drink coffee, as it has caffeine in it. I guess now I can chow down on some fruit with an occasional cup of coffee and not feel guilty. xD

    I definitely want dark chocolate now. *_*

      That’s Right Daquan,

      So many people around me are always surprised of how beneficial chocolate is.

      But don’t get me wrong I’m not talking about any kind of white chocolate, creamy or sweetened chocolate.

      I personally eat very dark and bitter chocolate with at least 70% cocoa, sometimes even 85% or 90%.
      Generally, the darker the chocolate the higher the flavonoid content – but it’s not quite as simple as that.

      “It’s not a certainty that chocolate stating a higher percentage of cocoa solids contains more flavonoids. This is because a lot depends on the type of cocoa beans used and how they have been processed,” – explains Sarah.

      And this might sound weird, but just like with any tea I drink, I add a teaspoon of honey to my coffee, instead of sugar.

      Daquan, what sweeteners do you add to your coffee, if any at all?

      • I generally like low salt/sugar foods. I don’t drink soda, kool-aid, and RARELY candy (I disciplined myself to cut these things out a long time ago, but I sometimes eat candy (maybe once a month)).

        I use the creams for coffee, generally two packets. Sometimes a teaspoon of regular sugar, no more than that really.

        I don’t have access to honey at my job, never really thought of that. But once I buy some honey, I’ll try it out.

          To be honest with You, I literally use honey everywhere I possibly can.

          Maybe if You haven’t got any honey around You there’s something else You can try.

          What I am talking about Daquan is maple syrup.
          That’s one really nice and sweet stuff, sometimes I use it honey replacement.

          Any chance You could get Maple Syrup to try it out Daquan?

          • Yes! My grandma does like to make coffee (I don’t make it myself =P).

            One day when she makes some, I’ll grab some syrup and try it out, sounds really interesting. ;)

    Good article. I don’t know if it helped my creativity, but eating a handful of nuts (walnuts, cashew nuts, groundnuts and pistachios) everyday for a week pulled me out of a low period. Maybe I should try out a similar diet and see if it helps boost my creativity. Talking of superfoods, you should investigate pomegranates and olive oil for their famed anti-oxidant and cholesterol-lowering capacities. Anything that keeps you in good health should be good for a creative person. ( Including long walks, short and long breaks, changing your perspective and inviting criticism)

      I know so many people, who take breaks to get of a screen, they go for walks and workouts, but …

      … but at the same time they eat very, very unhealthy foods like deeply fried potatoes, burgers, etc.

      Pomegranates is really an awesome fruit.

      And I use olive oil almost every time I am cooking anything.

        There’s only one way to be open to criticism – give it a try!
        Let’s say somebody criticized a particular aspect of your design : placement, color, font, whatever. Make a copy of the design, incorporate the recommended change, and then stand back and compare both the designs side by side ( or get an independent opinion). If the improved one is genuinely better, I think it will be a great step towards accepting criticism in future. [We too often think our creations are beyond improvement. Just remind yourself of what Tamil music director Illayaraja said about his own music – the day I think I have created the perfect piece, I will stop composing music. He has already composed /given music for 4000+ songs and still continuing].
        That aside, creative people tend to be egoistic and sometimes kinky, have notorious addictions and have awesome talent. Its a package deal. (Have you met anyone who was awesomely talented, successful, humble, generous and considerate?) This could become the topic for a separate article, but do take it in the right spirit!

        Haha! The only one on the list that I consume on a regular basis is coffee. I occasionally have a lapse in creativity but I usually get out all my inspirational books and magazines that I’ve kept for times like these and browse through some let the different designs soak in.

  18. Love this! Being something of a foodie and living in a town where we get lots of nice organic (ie, not GMO, or genetically modified organisms. Those are very bad for your health), and being a woman who has found it necessary to learn something about nutrition to take care of various health problems in my family over the years…as well as designing websites…I’ve learned a few things myself. You touched on some of them very intriguingly in your article. There are two important things missing though, one in regards to tomatoes and lycopene, and the other in regards to how to treat your nuts:

    Raw tomatoes do NOT have lycopene, you have to slow-cook them for hours for the precious lycopene to form. So the easiest way to get that wonderful substance, which also prevents breast cancer and other dreadful health nightmares, is to include some organic tomato paste in your diet. Use this in your spaghetti sauce regularly and you could be as creative as James and Dainis. It’s been years since I tasted Hunt’s catsup, but it doesn’t matter, there are many lovely organic brands of ketchup (the spelling of this food product is optional in the States where I’m writing) that will remind you of what it tasted like when you were a kid while providing the lycopene your body needs.

    On the nuts – Eating raw walnuts almost always causes a flare-up in my gums (a few is never enough, but a walnut binge can cause weeks of suffering from infection!) Nuts have a substance in them that blocks the enzyme your body uses to break down proteins. Don’t worry, the solution is much easier than giving up meat! Just put the nuts in a jar, add enough water to cover them, put on the jar lid, place in the refrigerator and soak for 10 hours or more to remove this enzyme blocker, and then your lovely salmon dinner will digest properly (your teeth and gums will thank you, too). Drain off the water and either place the nuts back in the jar if you want to keep them soft (and then in the frig – soaked nuts don’t keep as long due to the Omega 3 essential fatty acids in them) ~ or ~ spread them out on a baking sheet and dry in a low oven for 15 minutes or so, cool, and place in a dry jar to store…

    Also…don’t forget your greens! Any kind – they also have lots of folate, fiber and chlorophyll, many have powerful cancer fighting properties, they’re low fat but high in nutrients. I like my eggs on a bed of gently steamed greens with a generous squeeze of lemon (too many carbs will also slow down your brain, so don’t run to the toaster too many times a day, use greens instead! Only 9 calories per CUP!), and you can make a simple yet beautiful side dish by sauteeing a bunch of chopped chard in olive or canola oil with chopped walnuts and raisins or dried cranberries, a little basil and some balsamic vinegar (use organic canola only to guarantee it’s not GMO – most canola has been corrupted by Monsanto, along with our politicians). YUMM! Don’t over cook, though…and enjoy!!

The end of this economic disaster will be a welcome development for my health AND pocketbook.). Tai Chi, a little yoga and long walks through the woods near my house are helping a lot.

      Walks through the woods is something I miss, as I have only walks along the beach.

      • I’m very glad you appreciate the information I blurted out and are not upset that I wrote such a long comment! I didn’t intend to use up all that “real estate” but sometimes I get inspired by people, and that’s what happens…

        Funny about the cooked tomatoes and soaked walnuts, isn’t it? That’s the only problem I have with people who eat rawa foods exclusively. I believe in lots of raw foods, but there are some things you can’t get unless food is prepared, and some foods are toxic unless processed a certain way (like olives). When I let my mind drift and think about the long centuries man has been alive on this planet and how long it must have taken to learn some of these things I really get a deep appreciation for traditionally prepared foods. I learned about soaking walnuts from an online source of information, but it was confirmed by an Armenian friend who told me that when he was growing up, whenever family and friends got together nuts were always on the table to snack on (half a walnut tucked into a date is soooo yummy! An Armenian hors d’oeuvre)….and they were always soaked first. He never could figure out why and maybe they didn’t know either. But they were doing it the right way, which also happened to be the traditional way. It was his mother who told me how much water to use and how long to soak them.

        I was introduced to Tai Chi about 23 years ago. I didn’t have the chance to study “the form” before meeting my husband a year later, but his son was learning the Temple exercises so I jumped in. It was so satisfying that I never felt the loss of the form and came to love these simple, meditative and gentle movements. You can learn more in Marshall Ho’s book and/or video (the video is a good call to get a feel for the 3D motion of the movements).

        I have heard of Reiki and have a couple of dear friends who practice it, but haven’t had an experience with it myself. I think the power is in the practitioner in all things, and no healing art can be practiced with powerful results if the person practicing isn’t seriously selfless and compassionate.

        Walks on the beach are every bit as good as those in the woods! Thank you for posting on this very important topic, I really appreciate it. It’s so nice to see people stepping up to the plate and doing something to help everyone manage their lives a little better without being preachy, just with helpful intent. I hope all your followers get a lot out of this post, because there’s nothing more important than taking care of your spirit, your brain and the vehicle we walk around in. But most importantly of all, taking care of each other!

      Salmon is really something I’m really in love.

      I like to have it with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice and onions, as well with a thin layer of cream cheese.

      Cameron, where do You get most of your omega intake?
      Is it salmon or a handful of nuts or seeds?

        Tomato, Spinach, Nuts + dark chocolate and maybe Broccoli
        Egg is in reach too but Its price is a little high and also I’m not sure about the quality of Broccoli and dark chocolate

        About Nuts plz tell Me It’s better to buy a kilo of It (for example) or less?

          Well Ramin,

          I usually try to see what works out cheaper.
          Sometimes it’s a full bag of nuts, that I put on scales, sometimes it’s already sealed bag.

          But I definitely nearly every time try to go to my local market to get them, instead of a shop.

      Hahaha Gareth,

      I guess my intention really was to make You feel quite hungry after reading this article.

      If we are talking about nuts Gareth, I really suggest some nicely roasted hazelnuts, as they are my all times favourite ones, also with a handful of walnuts.

      And I’d also suggest trying to throw a few berries, like strawberries in Your normal everyday salad, it makes it feel more exotic.

      Gareth is there any berries in particular You’re thinking to buy or You just like any berries in general?

        Well strawberries and cream is always a good one…LOL !! more for the imagination right.

        No seriously I love mulberries (think they indigenous to South Africa, I use to love climbing these trees and eat from them all day long :-) ) and strawberries, blue and blackberries and basically I’m up for new things if it enters my repertoire.

            Hey there

            They are by far my favorite. The are very juicy, purple and sweet. Its been a while since I last had some but I remember them been extremely addictive.

            They don’t seem to be very popular in shops, even here. We just stop at a local tree and eat them. If you lucky enough to find yourself in a house with one of these trees that is perfect.

            Perhaps a good importing option. Where are you staying? Which country? We just take them for granted because there are so many of these trees around.

      • We don’t get a lot of blueberry/strawberry where I come from. Even when they are available, they costs a lot! But I do like and eat eggs a lot and I effing love nuts! :D I get my fair share of tomatoes and spinach often. I like coffee but with milk and avocado, I’ve never eaten them but I love avocado juice! I don’t dig dark chocolate but neither white ones. :)

        About the websites, I seriously can’t decide! I think Vaclav Krbusek’s site is pretty creative. Its not something you don’t see everyday but users with slow internet connections will never get to appreciate it. Apart from that Nike, MPD and Glamour websites are really cool.

        I’ve developed a great fondness for sites with the parallax effect since of late. I’m planning to learn it pretty soon. :)

          I agree with You – his website is indeed very creative, but a bit too dark for me, I must say.

          Yeah, I know berries are so expensive nearly in every shop, in nearly every country.
          Unless You have a garden yourself and You can grow them yourself.

          Isuru I also wanted to ask You what do You feel makes You more alert, awake and gives You more energy in long run (throughout the day )?

          Is it cup of coffee, or more like a bowl of porridge?

          • I’d say its tea. I’m more of a tea guy. I also have this habit of having a cold glass of lemon juice around mid-day whenever I can. If I have to pull an all-nighter, again its mostly tea and sometimes an occasional cigarette. I know, I know its really bad, but it kinda helps me to stay awake.

  26. Moderation is the key for everything. My day usually consists of coffee, tea, fruits, and rice. Asians love rice, we can’t live without them. Rice, specifically brown rice, is ‘said’ to prevent Alzheimer’s. It’s cholesterol free, a fine source of calcium, fibre, iron, and a dozen others. Great if you want to fill your belly without unwanted side effects!

    Before, I’ve been drinking cola daily, now it’s just coffee, tea, and occasional tomato juice (yum!). The thing that I’ve noticed, based on what I now take in, is that I’m more alert, especially during noon (you know, that hour of the day when all you want to do is lie down and sleep?).

    Not saying that I’m creative, though. I suck big time when it comes to designing things. But as a writer, I find it crucial to nibble on nuts and chocolate while on my desk.

    I should add, eight of the items you listed are just a few walks away from where I am right now. It’s pretty nice living near the mountains, quite the rural area, lots of vegetation!

    Last thing, I love broccoli with beef and oyster sauce, yummy!

    I’ll definitely add berries to my list.

    Now I Can Tell You How …

    … How I Became More Creative

    I was always told by everyone how bad coffee is for You.
    Well, well, well who would’ve known that a bit of research would prove something else.

    It’s actually proven that just like with everything – it’s good if consumed in moderation.

    So as I mentioned in my article having a coffee now again (not too often though), gave my brain quite a bit of boost.

    Since my partner loves home grown food, we started growing our own spinach and it just tastes so fresh. We add it to every meal we can, as well as steamed broccoli.

    And also guys, it’s known that junk food is as addictive as heroin, but the trick is the get through the beginning of the switching process from junk food to super foods.

    Since I started consuming these superfoods I got totally addicted.
    I’m really saying it from my own experience.

    What is Your experience using these superfoods? What superfoods are You not using yet?

    • Oh, I must say I personally learned so much from this post as well!! :) Bought full mix of different nuts, two avocados, eggs ( boiled them this morning), curd, dark chocolate (70% cacao) tomatoes :) And of course how to live without morning coffee!!
      I cannot say anything since i am trying it for 2 days only now, but damn it feels good to change your own schedule – feels like a bit life changing! And reading this post really helps to understand how and what helps! Thanks James! :)

        I’m a massive dark chocolate fan too.
        That’s the whole point Dainis. Nice 8 hour sleep (11-7) and healthy brainpower boosting superfoods will really make You feel like making life changing decisions.

        And believe me after a little while You’ll just get addicted to this sort of lifestyle. You won’t feel guilty inside no more, so therefore You’ll have plenty of energy, time and inspiration to make some creative stuff.

        Btw Dainis, Have You ever tried poached eggs? I just love them

        • ..and good work-out during the day :) Oh yes, I did the change, only feeling a bit tired from gym..because this is first week after one month pause..but other than that – super thankful for kickstarting eating habbits :)
