We’ve all experienced it at one point: we’ve created an impressive digital work, and wanting to show it off to other people, decided to print it. But after seeing the printing job, you are horrified to see that the colors are off, the brightness, contrast or saturation is all wrong. You’ve realized that your screen’s calibration is wrong. The image you see on-screen is a lot different from what you see when an image is printed.Read More
Here is something that I believe touches the design community and each of its members on a personal level each day. We all use inspiration and we have a “design style.” But where the line begins to become blurry is right between trends and greatness. It’s not so much that I believe a particular design trend is great or that one isn’t, but moreso that we need to take a step back and remember that trends come and go and that one trend doesn’t make a design great. Also remember that just because a trend works for one project, doesn’t mean it works for another. So what I’m going to do here is give a nice little reminder to think before you design and take each project on its own.Read More

I recently read an article on SixRevisions called Details Make the Difference in Web Design by Jason Gross. I thought it was a great article for the most part, but that it left out a few things and didn’t touch on the importance of making sure a design detail is actually needed. So I thought I’d expand on it a bit. I’m looking for feedback here for sure. I’m also not claiming that I have this down personally, we all need to work on some area or another. Be sure to leave your thoughts below!Read More
When we need to make a presentation, we often think about using Microsoft Powerpoint. Whether it’s presentations for school, work, home or party, Microsoft Powerpoint seems to be the only choice. But Powerpoint’s got a whole lot of competition: Google Presentation, Impress, Symphony, and its strongest rival, Keynote.
Some of you may have heard of Keynote, the Apple version equivalent of Powerpoint. Loyal Mac users have raved about it. It’s not as popular as Powerpoint, but has received rave reviews from many critics and designers. Which is better when it comes to performance–Microsoft’s Powerpoint or Apple’s Keynote? Let’s take it one aspect at a time.Read More
I spent several hours scouring the internet for designers’ workplaces and their specifications. Now, this will seem biased towards Apple products since almost everything I have seen on Flickr, Dribble, and other communities for designers indeed favor Apple products. But don’t worry here you’ll see all the most popular alternatives and everything else you need to build your dream workspace!
From what I have noticed the number of displays needed for a designer is always one more. You have two? Add another one. A good combination I have seen is a laptop and a cinematic display from 24” to 27”. Wireless mouse and keyboards are also favored.Read More
Searching for a job abroad is becoming more common every year. Many people go past the border of their own country to look for a life elsewhere. The reasons vary, it may be because of better financial prospects, it may be because of a better environment. Whichever the case – been there, done that.
So if you are thinking about packing your bags and getting on a plane, you might want to consider what you can expect, so you’re ready and prepared, when the time comes to board that plane.
As mentioned, I actually did go through a couple of countries in recent years and worked at various companies while doing it. I’ve learned a number of things while doing it, and hopefully some of the things I’ve learned will help you.
Of course I’m presuming you are looking for a job somehow related to design/coding etc., not construction or such.Read More
