Advent calendars aren’t yet the trend in the blogging industry but there have been really good bloggers that have found a great use for them. One of the well-known advent calendar is 24 Ways.

They have done a good job with their advent calendar which has created a new meaning for it. I am not sure if 24 ways was the pioneer in the wave behind advent calendars for blogs but they surely have been the driving force. Today, we will try to show you some of the best advent calendars. We will discuss what makes these advent calendars stand out and how they can catch the attention of your website’s visitors.

What is an Advent Calendar?

Google the keywords Advent Calendar and you will find the Wikipedia page that states that Advent Calendars have something to do with Christmas. Advent Calendars are more like flashy archive calendars which are being used by webmasters to give their schedules a new meaning all together. Well, that is the textbook definition of an Advent Calendar. Otherwise, the term Advent Calendar has evolved quite a lot lately and it is no longer just for Christmas but anything that you want. Actually, the blogging community recently picked up Advent Calendars and shaped its definition to suit their needs.

5 Amazing Advent Calendars

1. 24 Ways

The mother of all advent calendars, 24 Ways (as I said before) was the reason behind the sudden surge in advent calendars on various websites. The quality of content and the presentation of the advent calendar with a blog made people’s jaws drop. 24 Ways is famous for topics ranging from design to development. Even discussions on business matters and inspirational articles make way into the elite list of content that is published in 24 ways. This way the website is able to target niche readers and new readers alike.

The design of 24 ways takes care of various screen resolutions which in itself is a big advantage for readers and publishers too. Also, this advantage takes care of readers who prefer to access the website on mobile devices or other platforms like tablets. 24 Ways is famous for its high quality content and the over-the-top advent calendar is enough to attract users.

2. HTML5 and CSS Advent 2011

You might feel turned off when you see the HTML5 and CSS Advent Calendar 2011 after 24 Ways. But, please bear with the new players in this game. 24 ways has set a standard that might be tough for the rest to achieve, but it does not mean that others will never achieve the same. It is just a matter of time. Anyways, this advent calendar was designed with a set plan. The plan was to publish a new article every day until the end of the year 2011 and looks like the webmasters behind this advent calendar did well to publish quality content.

HTML5 and CSS3 Advent Calendar is full of crazy content with amazing images and planned drafts. The final versions of articles that you see on this website will surely force you to learn something new no matter how big an expert you are in the field of HTML5 and CSS3. I wish that these guys had planned to continue even after the year 2011. But, good things always come to an end, right?

3. Electric December 11

This happens to be Watershed’s annual calendar which covers the best possible short films from across Europe. Electric December 11 gives you the opportunity to enjoy 24 short films from across Europe. Enjoy the underwater bubble ride, discover secret twins, listen to unbelievable music, hug a tree or meet the prime minister.

Electric December 11 is not like the regular blogs with advent calendars. Rather, it happens to be an amazing collection of video based content with presentation skills that cannot be ignored. Do share your experiences once you are done with Electric December 11.

4. PHP Advent

Let us concentrate on websites that are more like blogs with advent calendars of sorts. PHP Advent is one such website with a simple to understand advent calendar. PHP Advent is another blog with content curated for the needs of its niche readers. The idea behind PHP Advent was to push its writers to write regularly. This is another advantage of an advent calendar. If you see a calendar right on the home page of your blog then there is this instinct to push content so that the advent calendar looks lively. This is when you learn to be disciplined and regular.

While you are at PHP Advent, you can also visit Photo Advent which happens to be the brain child of the same people who are behind PHP Advent. Similar template with niche concentrating on photography instead of PHP.

5. MDN Holiday Calendar

When big guns enter the arena they have to be different and better than the best. This is what Mozilla Developer Network did when they launched their advent calendar. The calendar focuses on dates that have something special related to Mozilla and its fan following. Be it just for fun stuff for its followers or ongoing developer news which can be of use to Mozilla developers, the advent calendar is regularly updated with fresh content.

The best part of Mozilla’s advent calendar is its look and its smooth display on any browser. Being a firm believer of Open Source, Mozilla has uploaded the source code of the advent calendar on GitHub. If you want something similar for yourself then you know exactly where you need to look for help. Good luck and do share your experiments with us.

Create Your Own Advent Calendar

You can either use the source code provided by Mozilla (and the two part tutorial) to create a Mozilla look alike advent calendar or jump over to Advent Calendr if you are using a tumblr blog. With the tools provided by Advent Calendr, one can easily turn a Tumblr blog into a advent calendar. You get to choose from multiple skins which can help you create an advent calendar that stands out from the crowd.

Advent Calendr provides its users with customization options and can be customized to suit various users’ needs. One can even separate the Tumblr posts from the advent calendar to reduce the amount of confusion that tend to creep in with a advent calendar.

Lastly, it will be your own expertise when it comes to designing your own advent calendar.

Conclusion

There was a time when blogging was new for us. It took time, but slowly everyone dived into the world of blogging and we know how it is today. It’s the same case with advent calendars. They are still in their infancy and webmasters are still experimenting with them. It will take a lot of time before we see very polished advent calendars and they become common on a lot of blogs. Until then, let us just enjoy 24 ways!

How many forms are filled out each day across the web? Billions of them, for sure. From small household blogs to government portals, it’s hard to imagine a website not having at least one form. And this comes naturally, since forms are the quickest way of having users:

• subscribe for a newsletter
• add comments to an article, pose questions or ask for support
• fill out applications (e.g. job applications)
• answer surveys
• perform purchases
• join clubs and forums

Styling web forms for both usability and aesthetics is a usual practice for any web designer working on a project. However, at the very beginning of the Internet forms were so dreadful that no modern user would have had the slightest desire to fill in one of them – no customized design, no smart capabilities, scarce consideration towards user experience.

Let’s see the evolution web forms over the past 10 years. It’s simply a lot of fun!

1. Pre-web era forms – the prints that we all despise

Yes, yes, these ones do bring bad childhood memories of endless queues at public administration desks. Perhaps this is the reason most of us don’t enjoy filling out any kind of forms. Hopefully, those prints will become out of fashion before we run out of wood.

2. The early days of WWW: 1991 – 1998

The first years of the Internet (1991-1996) remain obscure as far as web forms are concerned. Since we don’t have NeXT software on hand anymore, there’s no possibility of taking screenshots from back then to see how forms looked (if they existed at all).

As we all know, in a short time WWW became a mass medium and electronic forms made their way in. However, they were awfully rudimentary. Customer feedback was processed through executable files running on the hard disk. It was hard to find anything like an online contact form. For subscribing to a service, you most likely had to download a form, fill in a hard copy and send it to the webmasters via postal services.

The existent web forms at that time mainly performed search and submission tasks. The interface was dead simple and dull, HTML based with no CSS of course.

BACK THEN:

NOW:

3. Form use in online sales: 1994 – present

1994 brought two major enhancements in the web arena: e-banking and online ordering (pizza, as you may guess). Shortly after, Amazon launched its online shopping service in 1995 and eBay the next year. Naturally, all of them were using web forms.

Those days, e-commerce was hindered by the limitations of credit cards that didn’t support online transactions. The issue was solved around 2000, once online payment processors appeared. Web forms could then exhibit products for sale and then direct submitters right to the payment gateway where they could complete the transaction. This was a major leap for the internet making its entrance in the day-to-day life of regular people.

BACK THEN:

NOW:

4. Web forms in the days of social media: 2004 – present

Two major landmarks for social media are 2004 (the launch of Facebook) and 2006 (the birth of Twitter). Facebook had the most interesting evolution in regards to web forms.

From the very beginning Facebook provided its own tools for creating simple polls and for planning events. However, the original Facebook forms were simple ones, they had security issues and as for styling they used to hold the blueish standard skin of FB. Things got better though. In August 2006, Facebook launched the free Developers API, which led to a burst of applications, widgets and tools. Around 2010 came the first form management apps for Facebook. Users could now have their own signup forms for fan pages, reuse personalized forms brought from outside and build specific mailing lists. Since then, Facebook forms and surveys are among the most popular tools for businesses that perform social media marketing.

BACK THEN:

NOW:

5. Web forms and security

SSL protocol for data encryption was released by Netscape in 1994. Anti-spam tools for web forms such as CAPTCHA and password protection have only been available since 2000. In the dark ages before, there were knight battles with hackers and spam.

How could you prevent bots from signing up countless times? Using IP validation methods that aren’t by far infallible. One famous hijack of a web form occurred in November 1999, when slashdot.org had the idea to run an online poll asking what was the top graduate school in computer science. Even if the IPs were stored in order to prevent duplicate entries, the students of Carnegie Mellon managed to create a program that voted thousands of times for their university. The next day, the competitors (students at Massachusetts Institute of Technology) put up their own program and the two rival bots took over the poll, leaving the valid submissions in shadow. Fortunately, security options we have today are by far more efficient.

6. Contemporary profile of web forms

An important improvement came around 2007 when the first WYSIWYG form builders made their way in. Any internet user could then create forms. HTML knowledge is not mandatory anymore, since the remotely hosted form generators provide wizards with intuitive interfaces.

The portrait of a form that stands at the top of the evolution chain includes, by case:

slick design, CSS customizable

various publishing options: on blogging and social media platforms, on regular websites

e-mail submissions received, secure data transfer and storage

capacity to draw reports over data

payment processing

integration with 3rd party apps to extend its functionality.

Today’s websites are bursting with creative web forms. Contact pages aim to be both visually appealing and efficient as lead generation tools. Forms are successful in performing a wide variety of tasks: online ordering, event registration, research across the web, feedback. With CSS and HTML 5 at hand, forms can be successfully styled so that they blend in with the overall look and feel of any website.

For the majority of non-profit organizations, online fund-raising has become one of the most important sources of income, especially the last 10 years. Designing an inspiring and appealing donation page can certainly make a big difference in converting large numbers of visitors into donors. But, unfortunately many non-profit organizations simply overlook this much more mundane aspect of online appeal while paying loads of attention and time in developing innovative and inspirational online content. In this round-up, we are showcasing some exceptionally designed donation pages for your inspiration.

1. Save the Children

This website has a very sleek design with beautifully designated avenues intended for assistance. There are plenty of courses of action for users that could have made it a cluttered mess, but the design keeps it all very well-organized.

2. Keep a Child Alive

This sleek design makes use of large buttons with a variety of ways to contribute to the mission. A slight grungy effect is used in order to highlight areas of the page. Overall the design is simple and impressive.

3. Manna FoodBank

8. Make-A-Wish

Are you looking to get more people engaged and excited about your brand? Aren’t we all… Over the past 6 months I’ve been running an online contest for one of my clients. My client’s goal was to generate more activity from their Facebook community. They know that if they can get their Facebook community more engaged in their brand they can generate more sales for their products and services.

Over the past 6 months we have blown away all expectations for the amount of Facebook activity the client was hoping for. Knowing that many of our readers have the same goal as my client, I wanted to share this personal story with you. In this article we will review our marketing strategy, discuss the day-to-day tasks required, and finally share the results. By the end of this case study you should have everything you need to do this too!

Marketing Strategy for Generating Online Engagement

With a goal of generating more online activity from my client’s Facebook community I went to work developing a sound marketing strategy that could work to achieve their goal. Here are the steps I followed:

Channel Analysis – What are the best marketing channels to leverage for this program?

Engagement – What type of activity do I want to see from the audience?

Offer – Will an offer be needed to encourage the sort of activity that I’m looking to achieve?

After running through all of the steps above, my strategy was beginning to form. I would use Facebook, blogging, and Twitter to reach my audience, communicate my message, and encourage engagement in my client’s brand. An online contest with a monthly prize drawing would serve as the strategy that I’d use to achieve my client’s goals.

Contest Planning

Any time you decide to implement a new marketing strategy you should take some time to plan how you will execute your new program. Here are a few questions I asked myself before implementing this new contest strategy:

How will I explain the contest to my audience?

How often will I promote the contest?

What will my call-to-action be?

What will I offer the winner? Will the winner change monthly?

How will I select/notify the winner?

How will I fulfill the offer?

By asking yourself these questions prior to launching your contest you’re more likely to have success. Nobody wants to participate in a poorly thought out contest.

Running an Online Contest

Once you’ve taken time to plan out how to execute your contest, it’s time to implement it. Here’s what we did:

We used our client’s blog to explain the rules for the overall contest and each new monthly contest. We published a new article at the beginning of each month explaining the rules for the monthly contest and the prize to be awarded.

We decided to run the contest through Facebook since our goal was to generate more activity from my client’s Facebook community. We had our Facebook fans participate by leaving comments on our Wall Posts.

We used other tools like Twitter, e-Newsletters, and in-store promotional materials to drive traffic to the contest.

We came up with new contest activities each week (falling within the theme of the overall monthly contest) in order to keep engagement up throughout the month. We didn’t want someone to participate at the beginning of the month but then have no reason to keep participating throughout the month. We put it in our rules that you had to participate in one activity each week to be entered into the drawing for the prize.

It took some time to get our process fully worked out, but after the first two month’s of running the contest everything was running like a well-oiled machine. Marketing a monthly contest definitely takes some time, but positive results make it worth it. Be sure to keep your contest ideas fun, and your weekly tasks simple. You don’t want to scare people off with tasks that are too difficult. Once the month is over its time to select a winner.

Contest Winner Selection, Notification, and Fulfillment

At the end of each monthly contest we entered everyone who participated in each of the weekly tasks into a drawing. We then selected 1 grand prize winner and 2 consolation prize winners. If you have a lot of people participating in your contest it’s important to have consolation prizes so that more than 1 person can win something.

Here’s how we go about notifying the winners and fulfilling their prizes:

Since the contest runs through Facebook, we use Facebook to notify winners. We leave a Wall Post on our client’s Facebook page announcing the winner and we send each winner a Facebook message.

We include a little blurb about the winner in the next contests’ blog article

Depending on the prize and location of the winner, we usually collect their mailing address via a Google Form that we send to all winners and then mail them their prize.

We also ask our winners for a picture of them holding up the prize so that we can use it in promoting future contests. If the person lives locally we may actually ask them to meet up for a picture and to give them their prize on the spot.

Contest Results

So far the contest that we set up for our client has been an overwhelming success. The level of engagement by my client’s Facebook community has far exceeded our expectations. Here are some of the data points that we are tracking:

Average Participation Rate: 10% of fans participate in weekly contests

Facebook Business Page Growth Rate: Growing page ‘LIKES’ by 5-7% per month

Facebook Page Impressions: Up 35% since starting the contest

Overall the number of “LIKES” are growing steadily each month, which means we are attracting new contest participants/Facebook community members on behalf of my client. Contest participation is very high compared with an industry average of a few percent. The amount of people seeing our message has skyrocketed since starting these contests. Our labor is starting to pay off as our contest is seeing increasing traffic from Facebook to their website and online sales are increasing.

Should I Run an Online Contest?

Depending on your goals I would recommend that the majority of website owners at least consider running an online contest. Contests can be a great way to engage your online community, as well as, get them to spread your message to their friends. Follow the steps that we laid out in this article and you’re sure to have success.

Watch out! 1stwebdesigner will be launching contests for designers this February!

The concept of Google has changed little since its inception. Google is a user-friendly and very useful tool for online searches. We know what to expect of Google already: a search bar to enter the necessary keywords and then in a single click, relevant results are returned. The site is simple and minimal, so it can get ho-hum every once in a while, until Google doodles are born.

Google doodles, in a few words, are modified versions of the classic Google logo. They are often seen on special holidays and or for memorable events. Google doodles are a fun and pleasant surprise, because you never know what you’re gonna get. But do you know the story behind Google doodles? Let’s explore them together, and look at the most memorable examples of all time.

The History of Google Doodles

The first doodle was actually in 1998, to commemorate the Burning Man Festival. There is a stick figure behind the ‘o’ in Google. This is to indicate that the founders of Google took part and attended the festival. The design was a nod to the users that the founders were ‘out of office’.

Google doodles became a huge hit, and appeared more and more on other holidays: Christmas, Valentines Day, Thanksgiving, Easter, just to name a few.

Google doodles during the Christmas holidays throughout the years

Soon doodles started to commemorate lesser known events such as: ‘Pi’ day, Hans Christensen’s birthday, the anniversary of Sesame Street, and even the invention of the barcode.

Google is a company with a great sense of humor. Every April Fool’s Day, Google makes hoaxes and pranks that are sometimes silly, sometimes absurd, and always hilarious.

One prank in 2007 was the introduction of the Google TiSP, which is a wireless router that runs through the toilets. Moreover, Google promised that the TiSP has 24 hour, on site technical support in case of backup problems, brownouts, & data wipes.

Another elaborate prank was on April Fool’s of 2006. It was published with the introduction: Dating is a search problem. Solve it with Google Romance’. The search engine tool is used for ‘Soulmate Search’ so users can have a ‘Contextual date’.

Interactive and Flashing Doodles

Recently, Google doodles have gone interactive, and thus, have become more fun. The first interactive doodle was a clickable slideshow of a Halloween candy.

Since then, there have been many unique doodles such as a game, a short film, and more, all on the Google page.
One example is the Google particle logo wherein the particles move away from the cursor every time it moves near.

The Pacman Google doodle is a fun game that celebrates the classic Pacman game. If you missed it when it was on the website last May 22, 2010, you can check and play the game here.

Google celebrated Jim Henson’s 75th birthday on September 24, 2011 with a really funny Google doodle. It’s a pretty nifty doodle, where you can create your own puppet show. If you missed it, you can still see the Muppet Google Doodle here.

Probably my favorite of all Google Doodles is the Les Paul guitar one. The Les Paul doodle commemorates Les Paul’s 96th birthday. The doodle is extremely fun, it’s playable and you can create and record your own tunes with it.

Remember the days when a computer would require a floppy to boot? There was hardly any on-board storage in computers in those days. You wanted to save anything then you had to save it on your floppy drive or else forget it. Those were the days when DOS based games were top of the gaming heap and we would spend hours playing those Pac-Man type games. Gone are those days but somehow the love for good old DOS based games is still around. That’s why the playable Pac-Man Google Doodle became ultra famous. DOS games will continue to a place of their own in our highly technical lives. This list will introduce you to some of the famous DOS-based games that you can still enjoy during your free time. You won’t get bored. Trust me!

NOTE: You will require an emulator to run a DOS based game. Read the “Before You Begin” section carefully before you start downloading DOS based games.

Before You Begin

DOS games won’t run with just a double-click even when they are executable (.EXE) files. The best way to run a DOS based game is to download an emulator as they are designed especially for this purpose. DOSBox is by far the best emulator for Windows machines. Once you have downloaded DOSBox and it is running on your machine then you will have to mount your game directory on which you have the executable game files. Follow the below steps:

Type the following in your DOSBox window: mount C C:\games. This will tell DOSBox that you want to use the games directory as the source to run all your DOS based games.

Now CD (change directory) to C: drive – cd C:

Place all the executable DOS game files in the games directory and now hit the DIR command.

You will notice that from C: drive itself the DIR command gives you the list of executable files that are actually placed in games directory. Just type the name of the file like turbo.exe and hit enter to start your DOS game.

You can create multiple directories inside this directory to categorize your games.

Have fun!

Mac users can use Boxer as the emulator to run DOS based game while DOSEMU is the emulator for Linux users. Now that we know how to execute a DOS based game, here is the much awaited showcase of DOS games.

Prince of Persia

The good old prince is back to save his princess. Although we have the latest versions of this game already available, playing the same in a DOS console will always bring back old memories. You get three lives for each game which is actually a tad better than the real world where we get one life to save our girl!

DOOM

Ahhh! Doom is here to bring back your killer instincts. You haven’t yet grown old and this game will help you revive your old self. Also, this time you have many weapons in hand to help increase your comfort level against the enemy.

Genius’s Puzzle Pack

You got an iPad? Now you can play your favorite puzzle games while seated at the back of your classroom. Have fun and make sure to avoid your teacher’s attention. To be precise, this is a bundle of six puzzle games namely Scary Nightmare, Part Time Job, Cubby Hole Trouble, Marbles, Detention Tic Tac Toe, and Blitz Tac Toe.

Pac Man

Does this bring back some memories? Well, it surely will if you have lived in the days of DOS games. Pac-Man is here to revive old experiences and take you back to those good old days of DOS games. This version is your own Pac-Man with an all new female star with the original hero making occasional appearances.

Supaplex

Another DOS based puzzle game with pretty decent graphics and sound. The game is more like the retro Boulder Dash that most of us might have played. It is a freeware with a couple of cheats to make life easier.

Mario

If you don’t know what Mario is then you better stop reading this article. You aren’t a computer kid if you haven’t played Mario on your laptop and I mean it. I have spent months playing Mario and I know the love for this game. Those who always loved Mario and want to bring back those memories must download this game ASAP. Let me know about your experiences with Mario (and his girlfriend) in the comments below.

3DCube

Raise your hand if you have ever been able to arrange this 3DCube puzzle in order without any help whatsoever. I did it once after years of patience and I am proud of that! And, if you haven’t done so yet, then here is the DOS version of 3DCube to keep you busy. Give yourself a chocolate if you can arrange this back in order within a day. Let me know how long it took you in the comments at the end of the article.

CHAMP Kong

Wasn’t Donkey Kong a famous protagonist in most of the DOS games back then? DOS game designers had a thing for monkeys I guess. Anyways, here is your chance to live the Donkey Kong days all over again. Kong wants to save his girlfriend and you can help him do that. Don’t let the Kong down, please!

Bat ‘n Ball

Though Bat ‘n Ball is based on an old concept, hitting a bouncing ball, it has been optimized so as to keep your interest levels high. Here, you get to save a castle against a bouncing ball which will break your castle one after the other if you miss to hit the ball back. The bouncing ball will help your reflexes and probably improve them too.

Alone in the Dark

It is tough to get 3D based games in the DOS games family but somehow there are a few for us to enjoy. Alone in the Dark is a 3D adventure game with plenty of action to keep you busy. In this game you get to play a character that will investigate a suicide in an old Louisiana mansion. Be quick and don’t take years to solve the case like it happens in our real life judicial system.

The year that it was! 2011 was a year full of stuff implausible even in our dreams. The Facebook redesign, the advent of Infographics, the new Twitter, and (of course) the much expected new years resolutions that start to follow. My fingers are itching to talk about my personal achievements in the year 2011 but then I don’t want the editor to kick me out of 1WD for being overly personal. 2011 saw some ace startups that are here to stay. I will take you through some of the riveting and ambitious startups of 2011 that will continue to grow in the year 2012. Let me know if you have others in mind that should have been part of this list.

Row Sham Bow

Row Sham Bow is a game development studio backed by venture capitalists. The company focuses on developing games for social networks and various other consumer platforms. The company is committed to create games that touches the audience’s heart and soul. One of their fresh projects is Woodland Heroes that is doing well on Facebook. We expect a lot more from the team of Row Sham Bow most of which have the EA Sports work experience.

Event Grabber

Optimization of location based marketing is the new fad in the Internet industry and the people behind Event Grabber are well aware of this fact. Event Grabber will grab all the local events and categorize them automatically into various categories. Later on it recommends the same to users on the basis of their personal preferences. It is said that you have arrived once you are featured on Mashable and Event Grabber has earned their space on Mashable.

Kogeto Dot

Kogeto Dot was launched by Kogeto in the year 2011 and was appreciated by its consumers. The Dot lets you shoot 360-degree videos from your iPhone. Kogeto Dot happens to be the smallest (and the cutest) panoramic camera for an iPhone available to date. Kogeto Dot raised $120,514 on KickStarter from over 1023 miniature venture capitalists (of sorts).

Warby Parker

Nothing incredibly unique about Warby Parker but they still seemed to have attracted a lot of attention. Warby Parker is an online retailer for prescription glasses and similar products. The reason why Warby has garnered so much attention is the fact that it has shown guts to disrupt an industry that has been around for ages but never found competitors. It solves a real problem in the online prescription glasses industry and gives the end consumer the much desired choices.

Desmos

We see students carrying iPads, iPhones, Kindles and various other gadgets to schools. The problem that has come up with multiple gadgets that are used for the same purpose is the compatibility. Desmos has done its homework and come up with a platform which will be compatible with any device and make life easier for students as well as teachers. Desmos launched onstage at the TechCrunch Disrupt and has gained a lot of publicity since then.

Goalbook

Adding another to the list of ed tech startups is Goalbook. It has been tagged as the Facebook of IEPs (individualized education programs) as Goalbook seems to fulfill a void in the IEP industry. IEP can be extremely complex to design due to various student preferences and Goalbook founders have shown the courage to simplify this niche. Goalbook helps the team working with the student to better communicate with each other so that all can collaborate to achieve the desired goal.

Goodsie

Goodsie is to E-Commerce websites what WordPress is to blogs. You want to setup a blog real quick? Use WordPress and you will be rolling in minutes. Similarly Goodsie has taken up the tough task of gifting everyone with an e-commerce website in no time. You get to choose between multiple layouts and it happens to be a real good option for starters. With over $3 million in funding, Goodsie is here to stay.

Codecademy

Remember the good old days when learning JavaScript would scare the you-know-what out of you? Well, I am part of that same club who was always afraid of JavaScript during its initial years in programming. Codecademy took the task of making JavaScript learning a fun process and the startup seems to have succeeded in that pretty well. One can learn and practice the basics of JavaScript online at Codecademy without getting bored.

Fab

Isn’t that a lovely three letter domain? Fab happens to be a flash sale and home decor portal that has done well since its launch around 6 months ago. With over $11 million venture backing, Fab is here to stay for sure. Fab gained a nice amount of recognition due to its viral marketing scheme. The website asks you to invite 3 friends before you get access to its content (which is actually riveting). Fab is famous for selling unique stuff like iPhone covers that are made out of daily newspapers.

Get Around

Get Around works on the unique concept of renting out your vehicles when they are not being used. Get Around lets you rent your vehicles to your neighbors when your aren’t actually using it. Services like hourly rental and full insurance attracts customers and the service has henceforth done well since its launch. The $3.4 million dollar funding from CrunchFund was enough to keep the service rolling.

Oink

Another amazing domain name. I wonder where these startup guys get these domain names. Must be some hefty money exchanged before these domain names are available for use. Alright, lets get down to business. Oink is a actually a cellphone app that lets users rate any sort of stuff that comes by in their life. You can rate things like hamburgers and later on share it with your friends. Oink is one recommendation app which will let you rate items at the venues you visit on the fly. Oink is actually the brain child of Digg found Kevin Rose and henceforth has already gained enough recognition.

Zaarly

Another location based startup which focuses on the rising form of business in locations next to your home. Zaarly is location based marketplace for requests that are real time. You can pinch your neighbor in Zaarly who is ready to movie tickets that you are searching for disparately. Connect, buy and sell. Zaarly is backed by over $14 million worth of investments which makes its future pretty strong.

The Verge

The Verge might look like just another tech blog but it is a lot more than just that. Launched by former Engadget Editor, Joshua Topolsky, The Verge has the strong backing of Vox Media. The Verge is an overly enhanced form of tech. blogging where journalists strive to bring in in-depth analysis of latest news and updates that target niche audience.
