List of Web Design Directories Links from niche directories are of more value in SEO than submitting to general directories, and there are a number of specialized directories catering exclusively for web designers. Below are some of those.
Many of these require a reciprocal link and which have fallen out of favor since Google declared against “excessive reciprocal linking”; but in moderation it is fine as Matt Cutts talked about in 2007 – “Trading links is natural and it’s natural to have reciprocal links. At some level, natural reciprocal links happen, but if you do it way too often, it looks artificial.”
This is more than a directory and is intended as means for a client to quickly receive a quote for a job from a wide range of design companies. UK only.
The submission rules read: “If you are submitting a portfolio, design firm, or resource site, please select the most appropriate category and do not use “Best Design Showcase”. We will select the best to be placed in that category. You may however submit client sites or sites you think do have the best design to be placed in “Best Design Showcase”. Not all sites will be approved. Only well designed or sites with useful resources will be considered.”
Web-Development.com is a directory of Web design companies. We ONLY add Web design company websites to our directory. In the future we plan to add additional categories for related companies such as Web hosting companies and domain name registrars, but at this time we are only accepting submissions for Web design companies.
The Web Design Directory UK is a new venture and is totally free.
And last but not least is my own directory for web designers and webmasters here: http://www.suburban-glory.com/directory.html. It is free to submit to.

Hey Andy –
A lot of people have slated directories over recent years, saying :
- they’re not relevant
- there’s no SEO value
– they’re spammy
and a myriad other reasons.
But I love a good directory. You can’t beat it -yeah, the less well kempt directories may be full of crap, but there is a reason that directories are still, and always will be, relevant.
That reason is that as humans, we love to catalogue, categorise and pigeon-hole things. We can’t help ourselves. Putting things in a nice, little neat package of relevant-ness is what we do as a species.
And finding things that are bundled into nice, little neat packages of things relevant to what we’re looking for delights us just as much.
We’re all bloody librarians ;-)

Good list of links – still a big believer of DMOZ; however, be prepared to wait ages to get SEO recognition on the directory. *sigh
Question though, does posting a North American link on a UK directory help with SEO though?

Thanks for this great list. It is worrying, though, about not being quite sure how many out-going links one should consider safe to include in a site. Also, I decided on only ten links in my “link exchange” at the bottom of my page rank 4 homepage, so if web design directories want a reciprocal link on my homepage, where am I supposed to put it? – hm, will have to think about this.

This is a great list for anyone looking to expand into the web design industry. Relevancy is always a big undertaking at first, but this resource definitely makes the first few important steps a lot easier. Great post!

I checked through this list & submitted one of my web 2.0 design service website to few of them. But webmasterindex.co.uk directory is not a strictly web-designer’s niche directory. Rather its a UK specific general directory. Hence I suggest to remove it from your list.
Thanks
