Static FBML

An application which should be implemented by most of the fan-page owners. Static FBML is really simple to implement and can be used to do various modifications on Facebook Fan Page. FBML supports pure HTML & CSS.

We will use Static FBML to create customized Fan page for Facebook.

  1. Login to your Facebook account & Search for Static FBML
  2. Then click on the tab Add to My Page & Select the page.

Now we will add some code that will transform your fan page completely.

Creating Landing/Welcome Page

Landing or Welcome Page is the first page you see when you visit a new fan page encouraging user to click on the Like button. Creating a Landing page really simple & I will share the step by step guide on how you can do it easily.

In previous step you have already installed the Static FBML application now you need to create a welcome page image that will encourage users to click on the like button. You can do it easily in Photoshop or any similar applications.

When creating the image “Do remember that image’s width should be of  520px” the height does not matter but it would be good if you keep it of appropriate length.

1.Create an image with width 520px & appropriate height in Photoshop or similar application.
2.Create a folder name FB at your server & upload the image in that folder.
3.Now Navigate to your fan page & click on Edit Page tab below the Fan Page’s Profile Image.

If you want to add link to the image just add the following code

<a href=””> src =””></a>

You can also use text after the image with some HTML tags like h1, h2,, etc as done in 1st Web designer Facebook fan page.

7.Once you are done click on save changes & now navigate to your Fan Page you will see a new tab with the title you have written, by clicking on that tab you will see your image in that page.

Customising Facebook Fan Page8.Now to set your new page as default landing page you need to click on the edit page tab as we have done in step 3 & locate wall settings then set your default landing page to new page.

Now navigate to your FBML application and then click on edit & then click on add another FBML box.

Customising Facebook Fan Page

After adding the FBML box, enter title subscribe & paste the code from the feedburner into that box & now you are all done.

Is Static FBML even available any more? when I go to the page you linked there is nothing. Just a regular but empty facebook page. Has facebook disabled this app or am I totally missing something?

    • Gary says

It IS still available, they just kind of MOVED (read:hid) it. If you search for it, you can find it somehow. Some place called “Hike”, I think, makes it or similar (this is the first time I’ve tried it so I don’t know what it WAS like). Also, you’re not really making “tabs” across the top, with the one I use anyway. It just adds them as menu items on the left. What I’d like to find out is if there is anyway to either get rid of or “hide” the bars on the left and right, I’d prefer to be able to use MOST of the page anyway!

Facebook will Turn Off all FBML on June 01, 2012. Transition to iFrames Now! Last year, Facebook announced its plan to deprecate FBML as a Facebook page administration platform over time. This March, it followed up this statement with the announcement of a full transition to iFrames, phasing out FBML. Since March, page admins have not been able to create any new FBML apps, but apps which were already in existence remained functional until the deprecation was scheduled to begin. Facebook announced at f8 the official deprecation date of all FBML endpoints: June 1, 2012. This is the date when any remaining FBML modules inside of Facebook will cease to function. As the time has come to fully transition to iFrames and depart from the FBML standard completely, PandaCMS is a FREE iFrame software and can do the same as the old FBML

  33. Dan Ingersoll says

How do you add boxes to the sidebar of your fan page? I understand there used to be a “boxes” tab where you could do that, but now there isn’t.

When I go into the “Applications” on say “Video” and click “Edit Settings” it shows a box there, but it doesn’t show up on in the sidebar. How do you get applications into the sidebar and how do you organize them? Thanks,

  34. smagnesen says

    (lessthan symbol)img src =””>

Any suggestions? This will be great if I can get it to work. Thanks.

  38. Dave Johnson says

Awesome article with some great tips. If you aren’t using these tips to build a more interactive fan page, you’re nuts. Contrary to what some people believe, social media, especially Facebook, is not a marketing fad. It is here to stay and if you don’t jump on the bandwagon soon, you will miss this awesome opportunity.

  39. Rachel says

I have a quick question for you, I have a welcome page on my facebook fanpage and I’m wanting to promote our business with video content. Is there any way we can add video to our welcome page instead of a picture?

  40. Joey says

Hi. Thanks for the article. I am using it right now on my facebook fan page. How do i make the picture wide enough to cover both or atleast the left sidebar? I want the sidebar to b hidden when I click on the fbml tab

  41. says

This is such a GREAT article—thank you!!! Question for you—I have seen people post on a fan page from their own fan page. Every time I post, it shows up as my personal page. I would really like to post on certain fan pages as my business, not personal fb—do you know how to make this happen?

  42. says

I want to add twitter app to my facebook fan page but I want to rename the tab under which it shows……is it possible and if yes, how?

  43. chris says

Is there anywhere novices like me can learn how to do the first tip – I tried importing an image but all that shows up on the page is the code. More specifics would also be nice – the code you give just says yourwebsite – does that mean
    http://www.yourwebsite OR
    yourwebsite/admin/media etc OR

your readership doesn’t all have the same skill

  44. Cara says

Thank you for all the tips. I do have a question about Daddy Poll.. is it possible to design a custom poll box?? If not, what do you suggest is the best way to go about designing a custom poll box that can be placed in a fan page??

  45. Ryan says

the best facebook app to convert your facebook fanpage is shoptab. however it is a bit too heavy. it’s better to use something more simple and understandable for visitor. Use some good pictures and and attractive words with button “Shop Now” or something like this. IMO.

  46. Dan says

Cool, I didn’t realize how customizable Facebook pages were. Thanks for showing!

  47. says

    Thanks heaps!!!
    Very useful article!

I just happened to be looking into FBML when i came across this article in my regular blogs.

I have been trying to customise both my personal fan page and the one for work, so thanks heaps for this article!

I have tweeted and facebooked this link.
    thanks again!

Default Landing Tab is not working.
I set the default landing tab to new page but the Wall page is still the default landing tab.

    • says

If the Fan Page you have created is new & does not have enough people giving a like to it then its possible that you cannot set your default landing page.

    • says

@boom It’s possible that the default tab is just not working for you, because you are the admin. But it might be working for someone else who lands there for the first time. I am pretty sure that is what is going on.

and @Nikunj, thanks for the great info!

  49. MIchael says

Great concept for an article, and great info and follow through with both the mini-tutorial and the recommended apps.
Thanks for your time doing this.

Quick question to you, or any other reader, and it is with regard to donations.
Is there a recommended method for offering fans the ability to donate?
Links to pages with payPal buttons is of course an option, but it would be nice if there was something in-line or something so users could remain on the fanpage.

Thanks in advance! And thanks again for your article.

    • says

      Hi Michael,

Adding a link to paypal button is simplest way.But as Facebook uses FBML payment without leaving fan-page would be difficult thing to achieve & would require complex coding.

Even I could not find any application capable of doing it.
