5 Unusual Yet Great Ways To Make Money With Your Blog

Posted in Blogging, Web Design • Posted on 31 Comments

Blogging has been growing in popularity since a couple of years. It started out as a way for people to publish their thoughts online, and for others to comment on them. What started as a few sentences of thought and personal opinion has evolved into thousands and thousands of articles and posts about anything. As blogging continues to become more advanced, the advertising and marketing world has tapped into its potential.

Most Internet Marketers suggest you to put up adverts on your site to make money, but such solution needs a good blog traffic, and frankly in my experience there are many better ways to make money. So in this article I will be talking about the best ways a blog can make money.

1. Selling eBooks:

This is something that has been increasingly more popular over the last couple years. The main reason is generating a respectable source of income for those with relevant and useful content to share.

How Can I Sell My Ebooks ?

There is several ways to sell your ebooks online :

  • You can make a section on your blog where you can sell your ebooks.
  • You can create a little website where buyers can have a look at your ebook.
  • Have an affiliate program like E-junkie.
  • Offer a sample page or chapter so potential buyers can get a good feel for who you are and what you have to offer.

2. Premium Membership:

Recently, I have seen a lot of bloggers adding membership areas to their blogs. To do this you can add a new membership area where you can publish content for members only. And this is a good source for money but the content you offer must be original to your readers. In such sections you can also offer some freebies. You can take a look at the links above showing some famous blogs with membership areas:

3. Web Directories :

Web Directories are places where job seekers can pay monthly to have themselves listed in a directory so people who are looking for them, can browse such place and pick their favorite.

4. Job Boards :

All the popular blogs are trying to leverage job boards to make some extra income.Needless to say that in order to create an active and profitable job board you need first to have a blog focused on a specific niche, and a decent amount traffic. The advantage of this method is that it is passive. Once you have the structure in place, the job listings will come naturally, and you can charge anywhere from $10 up to $100 for each.

There is a lot of job board softwares such as Webjobs, SimplyHired Job-o-matic … But there are two main WordPress plugins that I recommend : WPJobBoard and JobPress. These plugins will allow you to add a Job Board to your blog.

5. Advertising :

Advertising is a famous technique every blogger use to make money with his blog. And there is many ways to advertise on your blog, but the famous one for bloggers is direct banner advertising. Selling your own advertising space is one of the most lucrative monetization methods. First and foremost because it enables you to cut out the middleman commissions and to determine your own rates. The most popular banner formats on the web are the 728×90 leaderboard, the 120×600 skyscraper, the 300×250 rectangle and the 125×125 button.

The downside of direct banner advertising is that you need to have a big audience to get qualified advertisers, and you will need to spend time managing the sales process, the banners and the payments. But there is websites that manage these functionalities and buy sell ads is one of the best.

You can also tag a blog for an ecommerce website (DubLi has a blog that talks about offers on the site, for example). That way you can funnel traffic from the blog through to the main site and get some business.

Very nice post you have here. This is my first time commenting on your website. Anyway I was very interested on the Premium Membership method for WordPress. How can I go about doing that? I am about to release my website to the public. I will have a extremely large audience from my YouTube Partnership and SquareSpace Partnership so this feature would really be great on my website.

    Thanks,

Good coverage, Ryan! Basic but a good look at the main ways to make money from a blog. Premium Membership seems to be the biggest one lately, I think it’ll be interesting to see how that one morphs and expands in the future.

I think many bloggers (myself included) should look at more ways to monetize than just plain old ads, which seems to be the default that everyone looks to. Thanks for the post!

If you are interested in selling e-books as a digital download, you may want to try a shopping cart solution that will allow that.

While it is true that the only external resource that you need to start an
online business is a computer and a connection, you must have some
personal qualities as well, because without these them, it is going to be
a lot more difficult to achieve success – not necessarily impossible, but
    definitely far more difficult.
The first thing that you have to bring to your business is an absolute
determination to succeed. From the very beginning, you have to be
completely, 100% determined that whatever you do is going to
succeed, without exception. You have to be willing to do whatever it
takes to achieve that success, even acknowledging that there will
sometimes be a ‘cost’ involved (e.g. less time with your family in the
    early days).
You must also accept that there is work to be done.
If you have not already done so, when you start searching the net for
information about starting your own business, you will find that there is
a lot of nonsense flying about, and you have to learn to recognize it for
    what it is.
There is no secret, magic formula that is somehow going to
mysteriously transform you from an individual who has no money in
your bank account to one with a million dollars, in six months or less.
That is called the lottery, not business, but you will undoubtedly see
products that make outrageous claims of this nature.
These products are successful because everybody is looking for the
secret shortcut to success that means they do not have to do any work.
Don’t fall for this garbage. There is no secret, there is no magic formula
    – success is in direct proportion to the amount of effort you put in, end
    of story.
You have to be organized and focused, and you have to have (and work
to) a plan. If a job needs doing, then in the early days at least, it is
down to you to get it done, and it won’t get done if you are
disorganized, lacking in focus or have no plan.
You have to be a little thick skinned too, because when you tell people
that you are trying to earn money on the internet, many of them (none
of whom have any idea what they are talking about) will mock you and
suggest that you are crazy. Ignore it, and bolster your spirits by
remembering that it is you who will have the last laugh!

    Back for a second comment.

Don’t forget the value your blog gives you in terms of promoting your own services. As we already know, if you’re a web designer you can gain great exposure due to blogging about design, showing off tutorials and sharing great info.

Don’t let this stop you there however. You can also sell consulting services which can be conducted using VOIP or even begin a local business campaign. Don’t underestimate the amount of viable business within your area – you could make a living just from the locals.

Additionally, reaching out beyond what you perceive as your main way to make money from your blog will keep you in a great mindset to jump on any opportunity that arises.
