It’s always been of a great interest for me to study how the web design develops in different countries of the world. There are lots of different approaches and techniques and though there are overall network tendencies like web 2.0, big fonts, clean layouts etc there’s always a great opportunity to see something unique. I’m not really sure what it depends on, the country economy, the average age of people, the number of creative people and way of communication. There has been many articles and showcases on the web devoted to Russian designers and design studios and as a rule, we can see a very special styles and approaches. One strange thing just came to my mind: though I live in Ukraine, I don’t know any design studio in here! In the post today I decided to make things right and to make a small research.
Frankly speaking I was embarrassed. I’ve actually made 2 researches, the first one – overall on the web to find out whether there are some recognized designers and design studios from Ukraine and the second one was the local. I went to Google and typed “web design studio” to see what studios will show up in the first 3 pages of search results. My assumption was, and which is quite obvious, that to be on those first pages you both have to put some efforts into search engines optimization and at the same time stand out from the crowd. While the personal portfolios from the first experimental group was a pleasure to the eye, the second one was a total disaster. Almost all of the websites I was opening were ugly, outdated, crowded with information and gave me the feeling like I’m in the early 2000s.
I’d like to hear your thoughts on this and what’s the situation in your country. My guess is that all talented designers have work either for USA or Europe as the internet business here in Ukraine can not give enough money for living yet and the heads of the companies still do not understand in full the opportunities and the revenue the online business can give to their companies. You will notice that 99% of portfolios from group one are created in English and that’s the only language on the website. Below I’m presenting the showcase of “Ukrainian style design” of both groups that I named accordingly.

Thanks for this great resource Anastasia. I’m looking to find design agencies in Ukraine and your blog gave me a great headstart.
D.I. Technologies – is great company :)
I like these websites. I think they all look great. Some people are just way to harsh. I think it matters what language they are written in.
http://www.neodesign.com.ua – is great studio, a beautiful portfolio :)

Showcase Of Web Design In Ukraine…
Here is a showcase of web design agencies and the latest trends in web design of Ukraine….
Sorry, but we read this blog to see inspirational stuff, not something that will waste time and give zero experience.
What’s the sense of including ugly works (like first 10 for example) in the showcase? That represents nothing bisides the author’s bad taste or bad search skills in the process of research.
If you highlight such a huge topic as web-design culture in a country, do it professionally or don’t do at all. Smashing Mag by the way already published a great showcase of Russian and Ukrainian web-design (http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2009/10/17/global-web-design-russia/), which you should have read if you’re an expert or someting.
digitalrie- the aim was not to showcase the studios but rather see if the situation is the same in the other countries and hear the thoughts of designers, this post is not meant for Inspiration but rather Discussion while the screenshots are provided just a proof.
I think, you need to try this google url. It is represents results of search for “Website Design” but in russian lang. Because many studios orienting on russian search phrases.
I was making search in Russian , it’s only here that I posted it in English for readers to understand, thanks
You really think that these sites present the creativeness of Ukrainian web-designers ? ’cause I do not agree at least with half of that. believe me or not, but good web-desing of Ukrainian studios won’t be in the first places in Google just due to fact that they (as well as studio where I’m working at) do not have enough time to make good seo of their own sites – sites of their clients are of more importance that their own sites.
I think you might have not read the post in full. As as company owner you would search for design company in Google and will see the results I’ve listed. Thus having no idea where else to look for (and since designers don’t have time to take care about SEO though they definitely should) they will order anither ugly design from one of this companies. I have also mentioned that there are lots of creative studios in Ukraine that actualy don’t work for Ukraine but rather for Europe or USA.
wow… great site….

Some are good, majority is really boring, uninspiring, based on templates and some are ugly…. like this one http://www.bragindesign.com/
http://www.softsoul.com.ua/ do they know ANYTHING about typography?
And I am silent about validation…
If it’s a designer companies, their sites should be just great and worth to be a good example of “how to do”. But looking at these sites sometimes I feel vomit near my mouth. Sorry.

i am glad to see here designs from my country, but I think some of designs in this article – are not good. We have many well-design website in our country, but most of great web studios are not presented in google.

GOOD desing…
Very nice to see my first home have so much talent. How complicated would working with a Ukrainian design firm be? I’m in the states, but I grew up in Ukraine and language issues would only be minimal.

heavy use of paid templates…huge market in the Ukraine for Standards based design
Thanks, Anastasia! It was very interesting and cognitive!
Earlier I thought, that in Ukraine only eat bacon and drink horilka. Appeared, that ukrainians in breaks are able to do still something… :-)
