Web apps have the potential to take over a lot of areas that used to be dominated by desktop apps. For example, how many people print envelopes nowadays? Probably fewer than there used to be. What’s more, those that do, probably don’t print them as often. Which means they’re less likely to want to keep a program to do it installed on their desktop.

Yeah, it’s funny how many of these “Web App” articles list websites that use Flash, or that cannot operate as a standalone app (without internet connection). As I understand, both these things are key characteristics of Web Apps. Well those were the rules I was working to when I created switchitoff.net, a site for managing household electricity costs. Try it on an iPad to see what I mean.
