Fractals are becoming more and more popular between designers and they have a good reason for it -with programs like Apophysis such fractal creation isn’t tiresome process, just play with settings, variables, scripts, plugins and get unbelievable results. At first I wanted to create one huge post with inspiration, tutorials and resources, but I reconsidered because then article wouldn’t be very clear. So there will be 3 parts: Inspiration, Resources and Tutorials. To get Your attention the first post will be inspirational so You could see what can be done with such small programm just by testing and playing with settings. Here I present to You 60 Beautiful Fractals Created with Apophysis:Inspiration:Part 1
Apophysis is a freeware Windows program for designing and rendering fractal flames. It was created by Mark Townsend and has since been improved and updated by Peter Sdobnov, Piotr Borys and Ronald Hordijk. Fractal Flames were originally developed in 1992 by Scott Draves.

I will continue with resources, script, plugin and tutorial roundup for Apophysis on my next post and here You go:

These are awesome pieces for sure. Too bad you can’t get Apophysis for Mac. Why would anyone make a Design tool and not make it for Mac as well?
You probably ask equally pithy and relevant questions such as “Why wont that girl (or guy) have sex with me?”
It’s probably the same with the guy who developed Apophysis – he only cared about the PC and didnt want to screw with the Mac, especially as he was doing it for free and released the source code to the world.
The real question *I* would ask, “Don’t MAC users know about GOOGLE?”
There were tons of fractal programs for the Mac, BootCamp and other tools (like Wine) that allow you to run Windows programs under mac (best option) and finally a Java port of the program.

I was just trying to find a way to meet people halfway, that’s all, vanity has nothing to do with it.
Sunday, April 19th, 2009 07:51
One thing with vanity is that its appetite can not be satisfied
Create an account to say how sweet you are and make you a favorite?? WTF? How much fricken’ FELLATIO do you g’damm people want????
Plus none of those recommendations address the ‘permission issue’ since I would guess that creating a Deviant account and going to your link to suck up to you does not by itself constiute “permission”
“Just because someone uses a free program to make their creation doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all. ” I totally agree, in the same way that finding a pencil and using it to write a manuscript doesnt make your book “free”…
however, getting recognized in an internationally viewed blog is not a ‘free for all’. Plus those images were all tagged with the artists name, so there was no chance they would be used by some crook (they would have to a bit of work to use it)
Sunday, April 19th, 2009 06:10
I guess for me it wasn’t necessarily that it was used without me knowing, I like to see when my work is featured! And as for Apophysis being a free program, lots of art and fractal programs are free, under the GNU General Public License (yes, free, but still a license), and people make intellectual property on them every day. Just because someone uses a free program to make their creation doesn’t mean it’s a free-for-all. Fractal art is art.
Asking permission is best. It’s a pain, but it saves grief, plus people like to know when when we are featured off of our usual sites. I do appreciate the link back.
Here’s an idea, if you’d like. Create a deviantART account (that’s where these came from. :)) if you haven’t got one already, leave the artist a message on the page of the fractal saying “Hey, you’ve got a feature,” leave a link, and Favorite the piece. They get the hits and YOU get a link to your site on the fractal’s page. Yes, a pain again, but it might eliminate some of the surprise people had.

@mark I agree wholeheartedly. Some of these people should remember that this is a FREE program ! I know they have put a lot of time into creating these pics – and yeah if an image became the new background in a Nokia or Nike advert then it’s a problem. BUT PLEASE c’mon – you’ve created a nice pic in a free program – share.
I wish I had created something you actually wanted to share !

These pieces of art are truly beautiful. I would not have even known they existed where it not for this post brining them to my (and the worlds) attention. They would truly have languished, beautiful and unknown, in the little artists enclave that is DeviantArt and other places (which I still wont frequent, because frankly, I dont have the time :(/
I find the petulant wailings of some (ok, many) bemoaning that no “permission” was granted before the pieces were made a small part of this article to be woefully misplaced.
One: NO PERMISSION WAS NECESSARY. The article is a NEWS POST and the likeness of your image(s) used was in the context of reporting the news and was FAIR USE.
Furthermore, as you all mostly pointed out, there was no harm to ANY OF YOU as a result, all the images were fully attributed directly with a link back to the originator. For all the scourge of content theft, illegal incorporation and utilization (where someone takes either the idea you have or worse the actual product, does a tweak, then publishes it as their own) this site and postings represented none of those evils.
It’s this sort of pussy based needles whining that makes people roll their eyes in disgust. There is a big difference between standing up for your rights, righting a wrong and between finding some slight, insult or theft when none exists.
Hey, guess what? It was all done (mostly) with a free program!
Get over it guys, please. :)

What’s the mac equivalent to Apophysis? Is there one?
Thursday, April 16th, 2009 17:49
Those interested: Please look up “fractalicious” on Merriam-Webster.com./ the Open Dictionary section Fractal renderings give new meaning to “eye has not seen” what awaits in Heaven for those who love God. (paraphrased) and that it is “the things which are unseen that makes that which we do see and that all things are by him, for him, in him, to him, from him, about him.” (also paraphrased). The “him” being the Christ, Jesus.

Thank you for featuring one of my Apophysis pieces, but please ask my permission next time if you choose to feature one of my pieces. I am grateful that you really like my fractal here and I appreciate the feature, so I will give you permission to keep it up.
Please be mindful in the future that many artists on dA do require their permission before their work is published off-site.
