You are probably one of those who chose web design because you are passionate about it; or not. You may have chosen it because your father owned a design company and he wanted to integrate you into it. Or because you started off as a content writer and after writing on design topics for two years you decided to give it a try. Regardless of where you come from, pretty much all of us head the same way: either work for a company or freelance – there is not that much else out there.

However, there are endless possibilities for us in the web design world – it is quite easy to grow both in skills and personal experience. Each one of us has a life planned and a path he wants to follow, even if there are many overwhelming challenges to get through.

But sometimes you just have to ask yourself, what is it you want to achieve during your career?

Answering this question is not easy to do and to get the best answer you need to look back at how you started. What feelings did your first job give you? Did you become a designer by accident, or was it something you always planned? Do you want to work as a designer for your whole life, or is it just something you want to use to get a bigger role in the future? It is important to answer these questions because each aspect brings about different outcomes. Some future outcomes bring much more than the others and if you always wanted to become a web designer, then it is highly likely you will always be happy with your career choice. Designing only for the money might not make you so proud of yourself – Steve jobs once declared he would rather go to bed every night knowing he did something great the previous day than being the richest person in the cemetery.

There are lots of reasons why an individual wants to be a designer. You might be a creative person, like the fact that you have the opportunity to work freelance, enjoy mixing both left and right brain work by coding and designing at the same time or enjoy working in a sector that is growing. Of course there are many other reasons, but these seem to be the most popular.

If you still need to plan your career path, then there are two things you should do. First, make a list of things that make you get up all excited in the morning when you go to work. Then, make a list of things you think should be improved. Afterwards, make a short narrative about how your career has been to this point. Clarify your roles and what you like and don’t like about your career. Lots of new job descriptions are written every year, so you might as well be the creator of your new job if you feel like it, but you first need to know where you want to head to in order to reach that point.

Image by Mr. T in DC.

If you are in the field because you are a creative individual, then design is definitely for you. You can be the creative director of a company because creative people tend to do really well when being in charge of a focused area of work. They might not be the best managers or business people, but they are definitely great at managing teams in their field.

If your main skill is flexibility, you are most likely what every company owner looks for. You can be everything, from outsourcing partner to company partner. You probably have the highest chance of living the dream and creating your own business. You probably like managing people, being in charge and taking care of every small detail – then this is for you. You can step by step decrease the number of hours worked for others and increase the hours spent on building your own company. In a few years this company might bring you money without you having to lift a finger.

If coding and designing are what you’re in for, you are great for working in a company or even freelance. You can develop interfaces, applications and even advise people in regards to what might be best for them when they decide to create a website. If you want to aim as high as possible, right now that would probably be Apple. I doubt there is better design out there, both for their web identity and for their products. I am sure there is a reason behind many Product and Industrial Design programs using Apple’s products as case studies.

If you’re in it for the money, you can pretty much accomplish this everywhere. However, I advise you that being in something for the money only brings short term enjoyment and you might have to change careers several times throughout your working life. In the design field you would be suitable for an executive staff job more than a regular day to day coding job. You can also start your own business and if you are flexible and good enough, this will make good money for you.

What you want to achieve depends also on what you want to focus on. Do you want to provide for your family and make sure they have everything they need? Do you want to offer services for the small companies who need start-up help? Do you want to provide services for specific communities only? I have a friend who owns a company that focuses on churches. They only design for churches and they have quite the portfolio. It is totally up to you what you focus on, but remember every decision you make will reflect upon you later in your career.

To give you a more specific answer, Mark Zuckerberg makes donations. Google’s co-founders have become philanthropists. Adriana Huffington wrote about how to maintain your health if you live and work in a fast-paced digital environment. Every one of those is a legacy they left behind. What is it you want to leave behind?

Some other questions you might ask yourself are: do you want to design for you or for others? Do you want to take direct responsibility for your actions? What kinds of websites do you like to design? Are you more excited about coding or actually building interfaces? Do you want to write about design or actually do it – or both?

Working as a web designer is hard work, and many times you will have to spend more than 60 hours per week forcing ideas out. Challenges are out there at every step and it is purely impossible not to run into them now and then. If you know what you want from life and mostly from your web design career, and you are ready to work hard for it, it is difficult not to enjoy great times. Before making a decision, think about what you want to achieve – then work for it, and sooner than you think you will find yourself on the right path.

Until next time, let’s hear your opinions on this topic. Do you think you made the right choice? Is there something you would like to change in your approach?

Have you ever thought that the reason behind you not getting any design jobs is not the amount of skills you have, but the résumé you send to companies? Think that when companies post job openings hundreds of applications come in day by day and the HR manager needs to sort the bad ones out first. What if your résumé, even if you are a great designer, fails to make the second round?

The goal of the companies is to determine if you really are the person on your résumé, and they do this by first looking at your basic skills. Most of the hiring staff only want to contact applicants on the phone, because this is easier for them and more effective, so they will try to get you on the phone soon after your CV passes the initial basic requirements.

They also look at how dynamic a person is and try and determine a bit about their personality – previously working in groups is an advantage, as graphic and web designers have to do this every day at their jobs. If your personality and the basic skills get the OK, then the HR manager will probably ask technical employees more about your coding skills. Although it is a very quick process, it all starts with your résumé and if the one you submit is not good enough, you will never get a phone or direct interview.

1. Tell them where to find you

I do not mean your home address – this is something you should have in your CV anyway. I’m talking about your portfolio. If I want to hire somebody, I definitely do not want to spend time searching for him on Google. I am not hired to do this, if you are not smart enough to provide it yourself, your CV goes to the shredder. List your web page in the header of your résumé, so it is the first thing the hiring staff notices.

Keep in mind you also need to show your work. If you say you are good in HTML5, the company needs to be able to be convinced before you will be called for an interview.

2. Follow people to stay in touch

An important asset of a job candidate in the design field is to be in touch. It is important to use websites for inspiration, to follow other fellow designers on Twitter and exchange opinions with developers. Many companies ask during the interview who you follow in the design industry, either on Twitter, Dribble, Facebook or other media. I am not saying you should prepare an answer only for the sake of it, I am saying you should actually follow people in the industry.

Another question you might get asked is what did you do in the last year to become a better designer. This is a key one because it will show your potential employer you are really interested in what you do and are passionate about it. Moreover, it will show you continuously work to improve yourself and this is something managers like to hear. You can take different courses on the internet or pay for subscriptions on Lynda.com. Code School and A Book Apart are some other great resources you can use.

Your résumé should show that you are interested and look to grow as a designer or developer. You should be able to adapt to new techniques and show that you always have a hand on what is new in the industry.

3. Notice the job description

When applying for a graphic designer job, knowing ASP.net doesn’t help too much. It is an advantage, but it is not what you will be evaluated on. It is a good idea to write a personalized cover letter for each job you apply for; make sure it is unique and reflects why you wish to work for that company in that specific opening. Although you think they will not, I assure you HR managers notice when people send mass e-mails, so as said before, avoid doing it. You can create a good, strong impression if you write a unique e-mail to each job posting – as a matter of fact, as all of them are different, it would be stupid to send the same application to all of them.

4. No signs of experience

How do you expect to get a job if you have no experience in the field you apply for? I am sure there are job openings for inexperienced people, but they do not mean newbies. If the work you did before is not something you are entirely proud of, you can always create your own project. Use your skills to create a template and sell it on ThemeForest or any other similar website. Do you have a lot of client work that doesn’t show your creativity? It’s never impossible to make something on your own – a hiring manager will appreciate the fact that you design in your free time as well. If you think your portfolio can be improved, do it before sending out your résumé.

5. Show you are a designer

When you send out a CV for an engineer job, it can be a basic word format with no template. But when you apply for a design job, why not put your creativity skills to work and make a great template for your résumé? If you are able to design a stunning template for your CVs, this will scream creativity, care and attention to details and will move you to the top of the list right away. If you don’t have time for this, use a digital tool such as Zerply. The templates they offer look great and the portfolios uploaded there are very easy to maintain. Another tip is to send PDFs instead of Word documents and sending out your whole website (if it works as a classic résumé) can be effective as well.

Conclusion

These were only a few basic tips to improve your CV. Remember that while there is no direct contact between you and the company, the résumé is the only piece of work that will bind the two of you. It is always worth spending two hours on building a stunning CV than using two hours for sending out default templated résumé.

Keep in mind you need to show creativity and willingness to improve and your résumé will pass into the second round. Now if you are a good designer and have the necessary skills, you will pass through the third round and will be able to meet the hiring manager in person. But tips for a face-to-face interview another time…

Until next time, let’s stir up a discussion here. Do you have some other tips to give all of us for improving our CV?

Clients always have a lot of questions, don’t they? They ask a lot of questions because they just don’t know how things work on this “Internet thing”. They just want their pretty site online and with Comics Sans, please.

So, guess who will have to tell them the bad news, and teach them the basics? Yeah, I’m looking at you.

We, at 1stwebdesigner, are nice guys so we’ll help you with a few common things that clients don’t understand, but they really need to, because when they do, everything will be much easier and more pleasant to do.

So, let’s rock.

1. How This “Web Design Thing” Works

by axenteoz

Here you should tell them your complete process including parts that aren’t covered by your current contract. For instance, even if you weren’t contracted for SEO consulting, you should tell them where you’d put this, if they want to contract you or another person for doing so.

You should explain the big development blocks, and even break them up into smaller ones, like breaking up “development” into “Look, first I do HTML coding, then JS coding and then I add this to our CMS, so you’ll be able to add content only at this point.”

All those explanations are important so your client will know when he will have each part of this thing done, avoiding weird things like you doing everything in a hurry and then waiting weeks for content.

2. Web Designing Isn’t Just Typing A Few Commands Inside A Fancy Text Editor

by svilen001

The first item on this list may help you a little bit, but many clients thinks that all web designing is done with a few commands and then drawing a few fancy things using Word or Paint (thanks DreamWeaver and FrontPage).

If you think that your current client is that type, bad news for you.

I hope you are a patient person (I mean, the kind of patient that will make buddhist monks look angry and impatient) so you can do a big thing for the Web Design Community: teach your client HTML basics.

Believe me, it’s not as bad as it seems.

First you should tell them its importance. We have W3C for one reason, HTML code can be “understood” by machines, so they really know which kind of content you’re creating. Teaching them a bit about HTML is not the same as teaching them how to customize their CSS. It’s about cool things like SEO, data mining, multiple devices able to read same content.

Then you could introduce them a few quite common content tags (p, h1-6, strong, blockquote, ul, li, dl, table…).

If your client knows HTML basics they can do a much better job when they’re updating the website by themselves. They’ll know why it’s so important to do things with h’s instead of ordinary P’s with increased site (not to mention FONT tags) and why they can’t just paste content from Word of Email clients.

3. Domain, Hosting, And Email Aren’t The Same Thing

Many people never stopped to think about it because we really understand this almost by osmosis. But how do you get things online? I mean, why can I go to google.com and not mywife’sPC.com/hiddenfiles? Why can’t you just get rochester@google.com, instead of boring rochester@thisIsMyOwnDomain.com.br ?

It’s time for a metaphor, the house metaphor (no, clouds above doesn’t mean internet).

by: lsgc

Hosting

Is the building, where you can put things. Usually we just rent it from hosting companies, so we don’t need to spend a lot of money building it.

There is where you store all your cool stuff and when people walk into your house (website) they’ll see this stuff (unless you hide it from them, for sure).

Domain

Is the address, ZIP code, the directions to get to the house. So when someone asks “How do I get to your house, bro?” You say “Easy, just go to myHouseIsPrettyCoolIndeed.com, if you get lost, ask google, he knows everything!”. And the same way you can have multiple entrances for a house, you can make several domains pointing to a single domain, so you’ll give your users more ways to get to you.

E-Mail

Is like people’s names inside the house. So, if anyone wants to send letters to your father they’ll have to send it to your house, right? This is the same thing, if your house is mydomain.com people can reach you by me@mydomain.com. If they send to me@myNeighbor.com they’ll reach the wrong “me” :)

4. What Is DNS Propagation

It’s quite hard to understand why it takes even 2 days to have your site working just because you’ve moved your site from one server to another. And this headache is gracefully caused by our beloved DNS servers.

Actually it’s a little bit hard to understand (some people say that we don’t even have this DNS “propagation” thing, since it’s usually TTL caching issue). But let’s stick with a pretty simple explanation that works well for anyone with more than 2 neurons (sorry amoeboid and trolls):

Hosting servers on the internet actually don’t have a really cool name. For example, many of them have a “name” formed by 4 groups of digits, like 74.125.234.50. It’s even worse than “Rochester” isn’t it?

Look, something like 74.125.234.50 isn’t that easy to remember, right? So, that’s why we have things called Domain Name Service servers.

They’re quite smart guys that can remember the “nice name” (google.com) for each “ugly name” (74.125.234.50). So, when you type google.com in your browser, your Internet Service Provider asks DNS “bro, where is this google.com guy is hidden?” and DNS answers “Oh, you meant 74.125.234.50 , right?”.

So far, so good. Now you need to know just one more little thing, since we have several DNS servers over the web, when you change your hosting from company #1 to company #2, each DNS server has to tell his brothers about this change. So while one DNS server thinks that mysite.com is still hosted on company #1, others know that it’s actually on company #2, so a few users won’t be able to see your site in the meantime, depending on the route that they get (which DNS server their ISP ask).

5. Don’t Be A Comics Sans Criminal

Nobody needs to be a typography expert to know that Comic Sans is a really restricted font. It works pretty well, for comics. And only for that.

Google WebFonts allows you to use a lot of way better alternatives, but I recommend you don’t depend on it too much (since it’s a free service they have no obligation to keep it up 100% of the time). You could use font squirrel @font-face generator with Google WebFont fonts so you’ll have cool types and don’t need to bother using Google’s service.

Another good thing, is trying to tell your client how fonts are important, how they complete any design work, and a little of typography basics (sans-serif X serif, system defaults X @font-face imported).

6. IE6 Isn’t A Real Browser (yet)

by nkzs

Maybe IE10 will be an awesome browser. But currently, IE is far behind the alternatives. So, try convincing your client to switch to a real browser.

But the important thing here is: Forget about IE6. Unless it’s really your target (and if it is, it’s really bad for you) IE6 is hardly same as Mobiles. IE7 is really bad also, and if you notice a down market share, forget about it too.

I’m not talking about doing things that don’t work on IE. I’m talking about doing things the right way, and don’t lose time trying to get same effect in old and outdated software, move on.

7. Sorry, I’ve Forgotten My Magic Bean At Home

by mzacha

One thing that I really hate is when people say “Well, but I’ve seen it on google.com, facebook.com, anotherbigwebsite.com, so it’s possible to do. Do it.”

Assuming that you know everything that can be known in the Web Design field, we have 3 key points that define how our final work will look:

Time – “Any problem can be solved with infinite time.” The more time you have, the higher quality will be, at a lower price (since you have more time, you can do other things in the meantime).

Quality – High quality requires more time and more price.

Price – The higher the price, shorter the time may also result to high quality.

So you can show this to your client and ask him to choose 2 of 3 items. If they want it done quick and really well, he’ll pay a high price for it. If he has a small budget and wants it done quick, the quality won’t be as good, and if he wants great quality, and has a small budget, you can tell him that you will have to make higher paying clients a priority, but you’re still going to get his work done.

The main point is, we have limited resources. Do you want google-like-state-of-art-javascript done by tomorrow, then you’ll pay A LOT for it.

How About You?

I’m pretty sure you’ve been asked a few great questions from clients that just don’t quite understand what goes into designing and launching a website. Share it with us!

You may have had an experience with videography or two, albeit non-professionally. Maybe you have a friend or relative who asked you to shoot their wedding. You did well, and now more friends are asking you to shoot theirs as well. You find that there’s actually a big market for you in the industry. In the photography industry where it’s already full of competition, going into the new and growing freelance wedding videography industry might be a good idea.

Yes, venturing into wedding videography is a smart choice for enterprising creative people. But there are several things you need to research before you put a price for your services. You need to invest in a lot of time for research, preparation and experience. Obviously, you need a few things to get you started.

The Right Equipment

There’s both good news and bad news already for those who want to enter the field of wedding videography. Good news is, video equipment is now very affordable and accessible to everyone. It’s easier to get into the industry than it was five or ten years ago. Bad news is, technology advances so fast that your video equipment can become obsolete fast. Thus, nowadays you will need more research to know which video equipment to invest in.

First off, you have to decide whether you want your videos to be cinematic or documentary with the final output. The cinematic look means you shoot it in widescreen, 16:9 ratio, rich colors, dramatic effects, steady, professional shots. Documentary wedding videos, on the other hand, offers a grittier, more amateur-ish effect, but doesn’t require all the expensive and bulky equipment you need to shoot cinematic wedding videos.

Nowadays, you no longer need the bulky HD professional camera equipment to produce high quality wedding videos. Here is the list of the equipment you’ll need to start videography:

1. Digital SLR Camera with Video Capabilities

Most videographers, film makers and even movie studios now employ SLR cameras with video capabilities to record footage. The best option is the Canon 5D Mark II.

You need at least two or three cameras in order to capture all the important video footage during the wedding. Of course, this does not mean that it is impossible to make a wedding video with one camera only. But this means you will only have limited footage to work with. For example, during the dress up of the bride and groom, you cannot shoot the dress up of the bride without compromising the opportunity to shoot of the groom because these events often take place simultaneously.

2. Appropriate Lens

Of course you need the appropriate lens to be able to capture all the right shots. You will need the following:

First, macro lens to capture close up shots of important wedding objects and symbols like the wedding rings, shoes, bouquet, just to name a few. Secondly, you need a wide angle lens to shoot wide shots like the reception venue, the cathedral, etc. Thirdly, you need mid-range lens to shoot the whole event. Make sure the lens can handle well with low light or indoor situations.

Stated above are the main purposes for these lens. As much as possible, do not use wide angle lens to shoot mid-range shots, or macro lens to shoot wide shots, and so on. However, among the best lens for videographers is the Canon 24-105 mm f/4. It can serve both wide, telephoto and mid-range purposes. You can shoot a wide scene as an establishing shot, and also zoom in to the bride and groom to capture the moment. The lens performs well in daylight situations, but also does pretty good in low light and nighttime situations with its wide aperture of 4.

3. Equipment for Stability

Of course you need equipment to deliver steady and professional-looking videos. With this you need a monopod and tripod to support the camera while video recording.

Other equipment you will need is the Glidecam. Monopods and tripods are great for steady shots, but you need the Glidecam to deliver a smooth and steady performance for moving shots, such as back and forth, side to side, or up and down.

4. Audio Equipment

Have a microphone and audio recorder to get the necessary audio for your wedding video. Of course, it is possible to make a wedding video without a mic and audio recorder– by simply overlapping the whole video with background music. The end result, however, is more of a music video than convey a story on what happened on the wedding day. Remember that the vows, candid comments, priest’s sermons or the best man’s toast add spice and interest to the viewers.

5. Lighting

During nighttime situations, it helps to have decent lighting equipment. Be sure to know what equipment to use though, as there are pros and cons when you use lighting for the occasion. Obviously having lighting provides a brighter and clearer shot, but may also blacken out the background. Another is that it can cause eye discomfort to guests and can heat up the room. Shooting without lighting can be beautiful, as it provides more candid and deliver a more natural ambiance. Just make sure to bring lighting when needed, but more often than not it’s better to rely on whatever lighting is provided at the event.

The Right Footage

Be sure to be able to record the most important scenes or events of the wedding. Here is your checklist to make sure you have recorded all the right footage:

Bride, bridesmaids, groom, groomsmen dress up

Establishing shot of the church and the reception venue

Entourage arriving and the bride’s entrance

The whole ceremony, plus reaction shots of the family and guests

Vows and most importantly, ‘the kiss’

Leaving the church

Arriving at the reception

First dance, Dad’s dance with bride

Throwing of the cake, best man’s toast, cutting of the cake

Giveaways, decor, cake, etc.

Guests saying their wishes and goodbyes

Master Different Types of Shots

Know the different kinds of camera shots.

Fast Editing to Meet Demanding Deadlines

In most cases you need to produce a short video of the events that happened on that day to show at the reception. This means you only have, more or less, five to six hours to edit everything. You have to think fast and edit on the spot. Thus, you will need a fast computer, preferably a laptop so that you can take it with you anywhere. The preferred choice of most photographers and videographers is the Macbook Pro, because its features are accessible for editing. The Mac OSX is also said to be more stable than its Windows counterpart.

There are several editing programs you can use to edit your footage, but the most popular for professionals are: Adobe Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas and Final Cut for Mac.

Inspiration

Finally, every wedding videographer needs to find inspiration. Look for inspiring, creative and one-of-a-kind wedding videos found online. You do not want to give the same video outputs and ideas all the time–a wedding videographer needs to play it up a bit. Play with the scenes, and the concept to make the video more fun and meaningful. Showing your wide range of portfolio shows that you are a multi-faceted and creative videographer.

Here are a few great wedding videos as inspiration:

Great wedding proposal, must see!!

About video: “My girlfriend Ginny gets taken to the movie theater to see “Fast Five”. After a preview for the Hangover 2, a trailer for a movie comes on. A trailer I made of her father and I where I ask her father for her hand in marriage. After he gives me permission, I race off to the theater she is at to ask her to marry me.
What she doesn’t know is our family and friends are in the theater with her watching the whole thing, along with about 100 strangers ;-)”

Not exactly a wedding video, but this is a prenup video, or a ‘Save the Date’ video. Creative scenes, unique concept and racy subject, the video caused quite a stir in the Philippines when it first came out.

While writing this article I managed to learn few new money-making methods on internet.

The thing is, you don’t even need to be experienced designer or artist to start selling your work. On few sites you can even sell your leftover work so you get best out of it. While browsing I found that these all sites listed below seem to be really promising. Honestly I have never tried any of these but I guess it’s first time for everything.

1. DeviantART

4. Themeforest

Themeforest is just 1 of the 7 options you can choose. Here you can sell pretty much everything ranging from logo designs to 3D models.

7. Zooppa

Zooppa is the world’s largest social network for user-generated advertising.

This article is created to help you – find your potential clients or exactly opposite – to find who can do job for you. There are even job board directly related to help find programmer – designer and contrary. There are times when you can think, that you can do everything by yourself – but for me, I am better designer, and there is no way I will be very good PHP coder – I can get job done, but it takes a lot of precious time. Sometimes it’s better to hire somebody, so you can do what you do the best and not waste your time! Time is money remember!

This list features 15 best design related job boards in my opinion, hope you’ll find this article useful! In future I think to evolve this article and create other one just related to bloggers, because there are many services which offers affiliate programs, paid posts and things like that. I think it’s valuable at least to know such sites, can be good for article ideas too sometimes.
