The concept of Google has changed little since its inception. Google is a user-friendly and very useful tool for online searches. We know what to expect of Google already: a search bar to enter the necessary keywords and then in a single click, relevant results are returned. The site is simple and minimal, so it can get ho-hum every once in a while, until Google doodles are born.

Google doodles, in a few words, are modified versions of the classic Google logo. They are often seen on special holidays and or for memorable events. Google doodles are a fun and pleasant surprise, because you never know what you’re gonna get. But do you know the story behind Google doodles? Let’s explore them together, and look at the most memorable examples of all time.

The History of Google Doodles

The first doodle was actually in 1998, to commemorate the Burning Man Festival. There is a stick figure behind the ‘o’ in Google. This is to indicate that the founders of Google took part and attended the festival. The design was a nod to the users that the founders were ‘out of office’.

Google doodles became a huge hit, and appeared more and more on other holidays: Christmas, Valentines Day, Thanksgiving, Easter, just to name a few.

Google doodles during the Christmas holidays throughout the years

Soon doodles started to commemorate lesser known events such as: ‘Pi’ day, Hans Christensen’s birthday, the anniversary of Sesame Street, and even the invention of the barcode.

Google is a company with a great sense of humor. Every April Fool’s Day, Google makes hoaxes and pranks that are sometimes silly, sometimes absurd, and always hilarious.

One prank in 2007 was the introduction of the Google TiSP, which is a wireless router that runs through the toilets. Moreover, Google promised that the TiSP has 24 hour, on site technical support in case of backup problems, brownouts, & data wipes.

Another elaborate prank was on April Fool’s of 2006. It was published with the introduction: Dating is a search problem. Solve it with Google Romance’. The search engine tool is used for ‘Soulmate Search’ so users can have a ‘Contextual date’.

Interactive and Flashing Doodles

Recently, Google doodles have gone interactive, and thus, have become more fun. The first interactive doodle was a clickable slideshow of a Halloween candy.

Since then, there have been many unique doodles such as a game, a short film, and more, all on the Google page.
One example is the Google particle logo wherein the particles move away from the cursor every time it moves near.

The Pacman Google doodle is a fun game that celebrates the classic Pacman game. If you missed it when it was on the website last May 22, 2010, you can check and play the game here.

Google celebrated Jim Henson’s 75th birthday on September 24, 2011 with a really funny Google doodle. It’s a pretty nifty doodle, where you can create your own puppet show. If you missed it, you can still see the Muppet Google Doodle here.

Probably my favorite of all Google Doodles is the Les Paul guitar one. The Les Paul doodle commemorates Les Paul’s 96th birthday. The doodle is extremely fun, it’s playable and you can create and record your own tunes with it.

A logo is an image that is supposed to be the representation of an organization. The logo’s job is to give off the same energy you would want people to receive when you describe the company or organization it represents. That being said, it is quite astonishing that there are actually people out there that are willing, and more importantly bold enough to, post a logo design job somewhere in the price range of $100. Some even are bold enough to disrespect the creative community even more by going as low as $50, some lower than that.

The designers that accept these quite disrespectful jobs can’t be fully faulted here, quite frankly they just don’t know any better. For the most part, the people taking these demeaning jobs are either young starving designers on their last dollar with no solid client in sight, a relative of the person posting who plays around in Adobe Photoshop Elements every now and then, or they were daring enough to take it into their own hands after getting no responses. This treatment of logo design is of course going to lead to the inevitable lower creative standards set for this creative practice. With a key creative field being demeaned every day, a client base for this field with an ‘ignorance is bliss’ mindset, and swarms of people claiming falsely to be designers, what is there for real professional creatives to do?

Well, taking a note from Hollywood, how about the celebration of just how awful these logos are? We spend so much time celebrating how good logos can be, and appreciating the expertise displayed in some, that we forget how wrong a logo can go in our bubble. That is why in this post you will see an array of awful and poorly designed logos.

*Disclaimer: Positions can easily be switched with the logos listed here. Once you start getting so bad, they kinda all can just be grouped.

Editor’s note: Razzie is “the foremost authority on all things that suck on the big screen.” source

30. Kraft Foods

Kraft Foods, its a carnival in your mouth.

29. NYC Taxi

New York City is considered a cultural hub of the world with an incomparable art and design community. This is really the logo they settled on for their taxi company?

28. Bing

Remember back in 2009 when almost every typography lover ripped this logo to shreds? Sometimes one has to wonder if Microsoft is just doing this on purpose.

27. A Style

Wow, the wonders of all the imagination that can go into the letter A’s letterform

26. Locum

Locum is a Swedish property management company.

25. Verizon

Here one may see a top telecommunications company. Another may see a big red V that looks out of place, and a text that is less than interesting. Your probably the latter.

24. NSW Government

Now this is definitely the logo of a governing body I can trust.

23. MSN

This is a good example of when redesigning a logo, taking things away can and will lead to bad results if done inappropriately.

22. Comprehensive Health Care

I do believe we just walked in on this home while it was undressing…. Shame on us…

21. London Olympics 2012

Its kinda hard not to see the little girl on her computer. Maybe she is designing a better logo.

20. PathMark

GREAT FOOD! GREAT VALUE! BAD LOGO!

19. Aldershot & Farnborough Twins & Triplets Club

Once again we have a child being placed in a position that just screams inappropriate.

18. Pepsi

You can never accuse Pepsi of giving falsely advertising to the public what the effects can be from drinking their soda.

17. Bureau of Health Promotions

I wonder exactly what type of health they are trying to promote here…

16. GAP 2010

Remember a little over a year ago when GAP changed its iconic logo, to, well, this and completely shocked the world? While also providing great logo design roast material for the designer community? This logo takes the classical flavor that is gap, and degrades it to that of some common store you see in the plaza of your local supermarket.

15. ENDRUN

Gotta give Paul Rand a designer’s pass on this one, I mean we all make mistakes. Legends may slip too.

14. American Pediatric Center

Well this position doesn’t seem compromising at all.

13. Office of Government Commerce

If the current global Occupy movement doesn’t illustrate how the people feel that government organizations could care less about its governed, then this logo sure takes care of that.

12. Dough Boys

With a logo like that, would you really want to get food from there???

11. Kudawara Pharmacy

Uhm..

10. Clinica Dental

That looks like a lot more going on than your regular cleaning if you ask me.

9. Hilton Worldwide

Alignment issues are one thing, but this level of bevel in a logo design is never acceptable.

8. The Detail Doctor

Based on the sketch of this car, seems like this doctor needs a better understanding of the word detail.

7. Portland Trail Blazers

So is this suppose to be a what a trail blazer looks like?

6. Mont-Sat

Um is that looking like a….. Yeah, that is exactly what it is.

5. KIDS EXCHANGE

I didn’t know there are parents aletting their young children go through with this serious operation. What is the world coming to?

4. Catholic Church’s Archdiocesan Youth Commission

Now this isn’t alluding to anything about the stereotypes how the Catholic Church treats young children. I mean it even won a design award….

3. The Computer Doctors

I know one thing, I don’t want them anywhere near my computer.

2. Institute of Oriental Studies

Maybe from another angle, nope still looks like well….. what it looks like. Hope no young children are in the room.

1. The Cleveland Browns

Is it me, or does it seem like this football team was just so lazy that they thought a football helmet would actually work? They could have just been cheap too.

Type based logo designs are logo designs that are created solely with the help of typefaces. Logo design is the graphical representation of the business and it is a sign of the business or products; and therefore, must be created with credibility of the company.

Since the aim of designing a logo is to keep it simple yet maintaining the quality of logo, text-based logo design scores high because of their minimalism and excellence. Text based logo designs are most effective and they aesthetically satisfy the target audience and hold the potential to make a way into customers’ minds as a selling agent. As we have already published a post some time ago about Type-Based Logo Designs. Here is another creative collection of some amazingly designed text-based logos for you. Enjoy!

When a designer goes about creating a logo, the first thought that should always come up is the hope to create a logo at a high enough level that it could still be used decades from its creation. Despite that being the common hope, there are two different ways in which how a logo can transcend time and use. These two types being known as timeless and classic. Now logo designs that are fortunate enough to be qualified for either of these categories have many similarities, so much so that it is easy to confuse the two. Before going into the two highest level of acclaim a logo design can get, we first need to do a quick run through on the basics.

The 4 Basic Logo Types

No matter how you design your logo, with whatever inspiration you can think of, it is going to be classified as one of these logo types. Having the knowledge of these different types improves the quality of your design by providing more direction into what your best route is for your logo when considering the company or group it represents.

Emblem Type

An emblem type logo is one that incorporates the companies name within the design.

Examples:

UPS

Harley Davidson

Letterform

In this type, the logo is created by using letterform design(a letter’s shape) to create a symbol.

Examples:

Roger Federer

Associated Press

Text Type

A text type logo only utilizes letters and in some instances typographic design is incorporated.

Examples:

FedEx

Visa

Representation Type

In this type an image is used as a pictorial representation of the company. It can also be representing its reputation, perception, or attitude.

Examples:

Shell

Apple

Important Things To Keep In Mind

Always convey your message first.

A proper color scheme can make or break a logo.

Make sure that it is easy to understand.

Your logo should be adaptable, needing no changes for any environment.

Don’t let the creative in you try to make the design overly complicated.

Okay now that we have covered the basic logo design types and went over some of the important things to consider when designing a logo, we are now ready to take a look at what timeless and classic logo designs are and how you can achieve this acclaimed status.

What Is A Timeless Logo

A logo that has reached the status of being timeless means that it is able to maintain the same high level of acclaim long after its creation. However, logos in this category also need minor alterations occasionally to remain relevant as the years go by. These alterations could be anything as long as it makes a change, but the base structure is never altered in any way. For example, lets take a look at the logo of MTV.

Original MTV Logo

As you see above, this is a very well designed text type logo. It utilizes a great color scheme for the loud, brash, unruly, and whatever other youthful rebellious urge all teens and young adults have.

Current MTV Logo

Now take a look at the original logo of MTV, and then take a gander at the current one. The current one has a heavier font weight for the letters involved, the t and v are less playful, but the most noticeable and important change is the removing of the music television from the logo. As mentioned earlier, the most important thing a logo is responsible for is properly conveying the identity it represents. The music television tagline that was once at the bottom of the logo had to be removed, because MTV has become known more so for reality TV than actually playing music. That was the only mishap played by the original logo, assuming a company called Music Television would continue to have a network comprising of mostly music related content.

What Is A Classic Logo

There isn’t that much difference between a classic logo and a timeless logo. The only differentiating factor here is that a classic logo will never come across the need for a change because it complies to one of the top important things to be considered when designing a logo. This being adaptability. The logos that are able to be apart of the classic group have designs that can adapt to any type of environment you can think of, and it still will be able to do well. Let’s take a look at the ABC logo, probably the most iconic classic logo.

ABC Logo

Everything that can be said about this logo, has already been covered for awhile now. This logo is simplicity at its best, and won’t be seeing any changes coming its way.

How To Create A Timeless or Classic Logo

By now your probably wondering what is the best method to go about for achieving a logo design that can be categorized into one of these two categories. Well its a lot easier than it seems, and here are some tips to help you with that.

Always have the represented organization’s desirably perceived attitude, or message, showcased

Never overlook adaptability. Your logo should look just as good in your original color scheme as it does when stripped down to black and white.

Focus less on the type of industry the logo is being designed for. If your focus your design for a particular industry, and try to approach it with incorporating that vibe into your design, than it won’t be able to go beyond that industry.

Don’t be afraid of trends. In essence, a trend is simply an original style or technique that just became popular. You’re a creative, put your own spin on it.

Embrace your own design style. How do you expect to get the best results when your competing with your natural inner creative?

Conclusion

The difference between a timeless logo and a classic logo is all in the details, the little things if you will. A timeless logo design is one that is great in concept, but may need an alteration done to remain relevant. A classic logo design is fine the way it is, and probably will never see the drawing board again. Logo design is a very complex creative job that requires much to consider throughout the entire process. To achieve either one of these classifications is very possible, all it takes is to focus on the little things.

Coca-Cola is one of the most persistent and well-loved brands in history. It is one of the longest surviving brands, and thus considered among the most successful companies ever. The reason in part of this, is their strong advertising and marketing. Coca-Cola has always relied in advertising to promote and market their brand, and this is why they are always on top of their game, after having been in the market for more than a century! Coca-Cola advertising has indeed greatly affected American pop culture, and even the whole world.

Here is a collection of the best Coca-Cola Advertising from its early days in the 1880′s up until now. Enjoy!

1800′s

It was the eventful date of May 8, 1886, where it all started. John Pemberton sold his first Coca-Cola drink at a soda fountain in Jacob’s Pharmacy, Atlanta. Subsequently he published the first Coca-Cola advertisement in the Atlanta Journal.

There is little creativity found in the first ad, just some text. No artsy fonts, no images, no gimmicks. The first newspaper ad showed the company’s first (and definitely the last) tagline: ‘Delicious! Refreshing! Exhilarating! Invigorating!’

Soon afterwards, John Pemberton ran a longer and more persuasive newspaper ad. It still promoted the drink as a ‘delicious, exhilarating, refreshing and invigorating’ drink, but added more promises that the drink is an ‘intellectual beverage’, ‘temperance drink’, ‘brain tonic’, and it even claims to be able to cure ‘headache, neuralgia, hysteria, melancholy’ and more.

Of course, these claims are not plausible, but a hundred years before there were no organizations that regulated advertising and the false advertising laws were pretty much non-existent. Newspapers during this era were full of fraudulent advertising by quack doctors and scam artists.

Early 1900′s

Coca-Cola advertising during the early 1900′s relied on young women as their spokespersons. The first spokesperson of Coca Cola is model Hilda Clark.

1930′s to 1960′s

Coca-Cola is often credited for creating the image of the modern Santa Claus as an old, jolly and fat man in a red and white suit. Coca-Cola did invent the red-and-white jolly Santa during the 1930′s, the illustration done by Haddon Sundblom. Before Santa, pretty young women were used to endorse Coca-Cola.

The image of Coca-Cola Santa Claus appeared through their advertisements for three decades. Because of Coca-Cola advertising, the Santa Claus we all know and love today came into being. Before Coca-Cola’s Santa, the image of Santa is somewhat varied, he can be big, small, fat, elf-like, lovable, old, young, etc. He has worn all kinds of suits, even donning a priest’s robe or even huntsman animal skin.

End of 1960′s

Until the 1970′s most people enjoyed cola in ice cream parlors or the local soda fountain. The soda fountain counter was a place for socializing with other people. However, at this point in time the fountain was already declining in popularity as bottled drinks and commercialized fast food quickly rose to popularity. As you can see previously, until the 1960′s Coca-Cola advertising shows people holding their drink in a glass rather than the iconic bottle.

In 1969, They released their new advertising slogan ‘It’s the real thing.’ The campaign now centers on the Coca-Cola bottle itself.

1960-1980

It was during this era that Coca-Cola went global. The company has now spread to 163 countries worldwide. Year after year, it has captured new markets such as Macau, Turkey, Paraguay, the Philippines, to name a few. Not only this, Coca-Cola has expanded into many different flavors such as Fanta and Sprite.

With the swift expansion, Coca-Cola went with a massive advertising campaign. Coca-Cola always believed in advertising. The international appeal of Coke was shared in their advertising with the slogan: ‘I’d Like to Buy the World a Coke’.

The advertisement appeared in 1971 and later became the basis of the song ‘I’d Like to Teach the World to Sing’ by the New Seekers. The advertisement was considered one of the most loved and influential TV ads in history.

1980′s

This decade marked the birth of the diet Coke.

This decade also marked the introduction of the New Coke. It was a desperate effort after Coca-Cola saw a drastic decline in sales and the increased competition from Pepsi. The company execs responded by changing the formula of Coke. On tests, people favored the new taste. But in reality, people hated it. People missed the classic taste of Coke, and there were 8,000 calls, complaints and constant angry letters everyday.

New Coke is considered to be one of the company’s biggest blunder in history. The problem was not the taste, but maybe because it broke tradition. Many Coke lovers were attached to the familiar and well-loved taste that was Coke. Thus, Coke admitted their mistake and announced that it will be using its former recipe again.

1993

Aside from Santa Claus, one of Coca-Cola’s most memorable symbols of the company,is the animated Polar Bear. It came from the Northern Lights advertising campaign. The first ad featured polar bears watching a ‘movie’, a play of aurora borealis while drinking Coca-Cola.

2000 – Present

The Coke Side of Life

The ad campaign was launched in 2006 and it’s main theme centers around people drinking Coke and feeling happy and positive. You drink Coke, you feel good. The campaign has optimistic and positive vibes, and it captures the very essence of life. It encourages people to love spontaneity and to see the world in full color.

The Happiness Truck and the Happiness Machine

Among Coke’s most successful endeavors of today is the ‘Happiness Machine’, or in some countries, the ‘Happiness Truck’. Coca-Cola is grounded in its heritage, at the same time, showed that it can keep up with the times. The Happiness machine uses elements of both guerilla marketing and viral advertising by using ‘YouTube’.

Coca-Cola decided to own a word, and that word is ‘Happiness’. Here are some clips of the ad that appeared online:

Coca-Cola implemented the Happiness Machine in various places and campuses including London, India, Germany, Hungary, Hong Kong and more. The Happiness Truck appeared in various countries like Rio de Janeiro and the Philippines. You can see in the videos the authentic happiness the people get when they receive their Coke surprise.

A Coca-Cola Happy Ending

Two centuries ago in 1886, Coca-Cola was born in a tiny pharmacy in 1886. Now, Coca-Cola still continues to provide magic to everyone who drinks Coke. It has expanded globally to the most far-reaching places, offering 500 brands and products to the world. Coca-Cola is one of the most well-loved brand today, and it continues to serve more than 1.7 billion servings in one day.

Coke has now more than a dozen flavors including Diet Cola, Coke Zero, Coke Cherry, Vanilla, Citra and so much more . Products by Coca-Cola are now over 3,500 including A&W, Dr. Pepper, Real Gold, Royal Tru, Lift, Ponkana, Minute Maid, Fanta, Earth and Sky and Eight O’Clock. What is next for Coca-Cola? Who knows.

A company’s logo is the most powerful part of their corporate identity. Logos communicate with consumers and users on a personal level, affecting the market’s opinions towards the brand on a psychological level. Sometimes, logos need a makeover. It takes a lot of research to be able to execute a redesign of an old and familiar logo. Underdogs can get on top of the game because of their logo transformation and at the same time a major player can destroy themselves in just a short time. Here are a few of the most successful and not-so-successful logo redesigns. Let’s cover the good ones first.

Amazing Logo Redesigns

1. Kentucky Fried Chicken

Kentucky Fried Chicken, also known as KFC, is a chain of restaurants based in humble Louisville, Kentucky. The famous restaurant was founded by Colonel Harland Sanders. Colonel died in 1980 but still continues to be an important part of its branding and advertising strategy. The restaurant is most well-known for their famous fried chicken. KFC has changed its logo four times in forty years, and with each redesign it becomes more and more about Colonel Sanders.

The new logo is fresh, it’s distinctly new but it’s still all about the colonel. It made use of bolder colors and lines, so it’s more visually striking. Plus, the colonel has gotten rid of the stuffy suit and has put on a homey apron. The restaurant looks very friendly for the kids and the family. I think that the new logo can do without the KFC typeface, however.

2. Starbucks

Starbucks is a well-loved brand internationally, best known for their great coffee that is distinctly ‘Starbucks coffee’. This year Starbucks celebrated its 40th anniversary, and in commemoration unveiled a new logo. The iconic green siren is out of the circle, dropping the words ‘Starbucks Coffee’. The logo change is parallel to the company’s plan to expand their product line. They are already selling ice cream, and are planning to sell beer, wine and other products.

Some consumers were horrified about the logo change. Some preferred the old logo and didn’t quite understand why Starbucks’ took their name off the logo.

I am a big fan of the logo change. Starbucks’ logo is well-known all over the world. The distinct green, mermaid logo already speaks for itself; it doesn’t need to announce that it’s ‘Starbucks Coffee’. The new logo is streamlined, simple and elegant. It’s a great revamp; logo redesigns always get a lot of attention, and Starbucks was no exception.

3. Google

There is little change to the new Google logo, but I think it’s worth mentioning. When dealing with redesign, subtlety is always key. When you want a new look, you still need to relate it to its previous design so that the brand image is still easy to identify.

The colors are retained, and so is the Times New Roman-variant typography. Google removed other aspects that made it old-fashioned: obvious embossing and shadows. The exclamation point was also removed, which they initially added to mimic the Yahoo! logo. Now it is thinner, sleeker and more modern-looking than the previous logos. It’s clean, smooth and almost creamy.

No search engine is more fun and hip than Google–and that is partly because of the Google doodles which make the experience more enjoyable for users. Google doodles usually commemorate important holidays worldwide. Now, many get excited over the release of a doodle. Some even collect them! Some Google doodles seem to be random, but they actually commemorate important events like Jules Verne’s birthday, Children’s day, the beginning of Spring and even the 19th Anniversary of the 1st documented ice cream sundae!

4. San Diego Zoo

The San Diego Zoo is one of the most well-loved zoos in the United States. It is the largest in the world, housing more than 4,000 rare and endangered animals with 800 species and sub-species. The San Diego Zoo introduced a new branding identity created by Landor. It had a new identity, with a new tagline ‘Wild at Heart’.

This is one of the few cases wherein a total revamp of a company is strong and strikingly effective. This is the new era of the famous zoo, marked by a radical change from an uncreative logo to an interactive, child-friendly and totally new identity. The change is drastic, but it works because the new brand has a unified and strong point of view. It is more contemporary and speaks to the audience. It helps a lot that the execution is impeccable, too.

5. Yellow Pages

One of the most unforgettable tag lines in the history of advertising was from Yellow Pages: Let your fingers do the walking. The old logo was the all too familiar ‘walking fingers’ through yellow pages logo. But with the dawn of the digital age, Yellow Pages are now on the verge of extinction. It’s now a great inconvenience to look for a phone number in a bulky phonebook. At the dawn of the digital age, Yellow Pages kept up by going digital; providing their services on a directory, mobile and online.

The new Yellow Pages has recently launched applications for the iPhone, Android and Blackberry. The new identity is modern. Instead of the boxy rectangle border, it was replaced by a sleek pebble shape. The walking fingers are still there, but the open book is gone. The former logo was no longer suitable for today’s times, so it was perfect timing for a new identity. This is the era where the company is moving away from the paper and into the digital age. It’s a smart move for the company to remain relevant.

Logo Transformations that Need Improvement

1. GAP

Let’s first cover the biggest company redesign mistake: Gap. They released their new logo last year, and it was a huge disaster. The old logo was well-loved and familiar to all, used for more than two decades. The dark blue square with the familiar serif white font was well-loved and familiar, almost homey.

Gap’s mistake was radically changing everything. The logo was designed by Laird & Partners, in the effort to create a more contemporary and modern expression. Personally I think the new logo is not great, it looks more like a clip art from Microsoft than a “contemporary, modern logo.” I was not alone in this opinion. There was a public outcry when it was released online, major backlash and criticism poured on Gap’s Facebook and Twitter page. Some harsh criticisms include: ‘looks like a child made it’, ‘a joke’ and ‘amateur’.

It only gets worse. Gap chose to remain silent about all the controversy, when they finally responded it added more fuel to the fire. Gap tried to handle its blunder by covering the whole thing up. Gap posted on their official Facebook page, thanking everyone for their input on the logo. They are ‘thrilled to see a passionate debate unfolding’, and asked the online community to share their designs. They ended the statement with: ‘we love our version but we would like to see other ideas’. People were laughing with disbelief over Gap’s response. They dismissed their error as a so-called social experiment, and still had the nerve to ask designs from others.

The story ends with Gap ditching their new logo, and returning to their old one. Gap president Marka Hansen was fired by execs weeks after the failed redesign episode. Moral of the story? Don’t mess with a well-loved brand and image valued at $4 billion. As the old adage says, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!

2. Kraft

Radical changes in logo design almost always imply that something is wrong with the company. Everything about the brand has been changed. From ‘KRAFT’ it became ‘kraft foods’. From an all caps, bold font to small caps in thin, sans-serif typography. A tagline ‘make today delicious’ is now attached to the new logo. More colors are added, instead of the distinct red and blue.

Let’s tackle the good parts first. the new Kraft logo is sleek, soft and more feminine. It looks fresher, maybe a move parallel to their decision to produce healthier products for the family. The old font was blocky, heavy and bold. Yes, Kraft seems to have gone the right direction. However, they should have taken cues from other brands that the radical changing of a logo can destroy the brand’s identity. It just looks like the old Kraft and the new Kraft Foods are totally different companies with totally different products offered.

Plus, don’t you think that the new Kraft logo looks eerily similar to the Yoplait logo?

3. MasterCard

MasterCard has reworked its corporate identity, changing the whole logo and name. It is now MasterCard Worldwide, no longer MasterCard International. The familiar red and yellow interlocking circles are replaced by a fluid, swirly, multi-layer logo. The objective of the repositioning is to show the public their intention to expand to newer markets worldwide. The two circles don’t interlock with the bars, but are connected by a third ring shared by both circles.

I am 50-50 about the logo, but I’m seeing the whole thing as more half-empty than half-full. The logo looks modern and up-to-date but there’s too much happening–too many different colors, too many swirls. And when you think about it, why is the center circle off-center?

Update: The company announced that the old familiar logo will still appear on all MasterCard credit cards around the world. The new logo, on the other hand, will serve as a business platform to connect with their customers, merchants & shareholders through all their communication channels.

4. Seattle’s Best

Seattle’s Best began roasting coffee in the 70s, creating premium US coffee and setting the bar for American coffee culture. It has grown from a modest coffee shop in Seattle, Washington and multiplied to a thousand stores in the US and worldwide. It’s the second largest chain of coffee stores after Starbucks (Seattle’s Best is a subsidiary of Starbucks).

I like the old logo–it looks traditional, yes, but in a good way: it is vintage, cozy and homey; like a home away from home. That’s what I believe a coffee shop should be. Maybe the execs thought the logo is too old-fashioned, detailed and fussy. Seattle’s Best probably wanted to compete with other more accessible and affordable coffees like McCafe and Dunkin’ Donuts. They wanted a logo that is simple, minimalist and clean.

However, they seem to have gone too extreme with their simplicity. At first look, it looks striking–there is good design visually. Great typography, gray border with visually relaxing white space. It looks generic and boring. I’m confused whether they’re serving coffee, or eyedrop products, or mineral water, or house cleaning products. Seattle’s Best maybe the most unusual logo for a coffee shop; if it works for them or not, we have to wait and see.

5. AOL

AOL is now Aol. With a dot. Using a Helvetica font (or a variant of it). It’s an attempt at rebranding to be fresh and hip. Was it successful? Far from it.

CEO Tony Armstrong said their new identity is ‘dynamic’, in time with the website’s move to become a more content-centric and provide a world-class experience to their consumers.

First is their questionable use of font. I used to love Helvetica. It was labeled as the best font created in the 20th century, and has received much admiration and praise in the design industry. But over the years I have grown to dislike the font, just as I have an aversion to Comic Sans. Why? While I appreciate the genius behind the typeface design, it’s always in danger of looking tacky and ineffective–because it’s so overused. Their use of Helvetica is a sign of poor creativity and research.

Aol changes their logo background almost everyday, like Google changes for special holidays. It didn’t do much however–the backgrounds used were cliché and corny.

Aol was one of the first online companies established. For years it has been seen by users as a dinosaur, and has been overtaken by newcomers (Google, Yahoo!) in terms of success. It’s great that they’re starting to do something about it, but Aol’s attempts to rebrand themselves as youthful and fun are off-key. It’s lame, and they’re obviously trying too hard.

Logo designing is much often online today because many companies and brands are looking for a perfect logo designer at the internet, and it is your time to be a good logo designer. In this article you will be guided with the techniques on how to obtain a perfect logo for a company or brand.

Here are the things to consider in logo designing and it surely brings you to a perfect logo design.

1. Knowing What Kind of Business the Logo Made for.

Talk with the costumer

You should ask the costumer if what kind of business you are going to make a logo. It is very important that the information of the business is describe and shown in the logo itself. But there are some business that you don’t need to show what they did because its obvious.

Like for example:

Restaurant logos don’t need to show food.

Dentist logos don’t need to show totally teeth.

Furniture store logos don’t need to show furniture at all.

Just because it’s relevant, doesn’t mean you can’t do better.

The Mercedes logo isn’t a car. The Virgin Atlantic logo isn’t an airplane. The Apple
logo isn’t a computer. Etc. Etc.

2. Costumer’s Suggestion.

Let them suggest for a concept.

Ask the owner for a suggestion for the concept and the color of the logo but if the owner is out of idea make your own and ask the owner for an opinion.

3. Define Graphics according to the concept.

Make it Simple. Remember that simplicity is more effective. The design should be simple but make sure that it is meaningful.

My Imaginary Friend Graphics is a full service graphic design firm in Central West Virginia.
This is an example of a nice concept, I really like it, the image show the name itself.

4. Make it Unique.

The concepts should be unique and in your own, it should not be similar with the competitor’s logo.

FedEx Corporation, originally known as FDX Corporation, is a logistics services company, based in the United States with headquarters in Memphis, Tennessee.

FedEx Logo is very unique because of its hidden arrow between E & X. Apparently it’s a hidden sign symbolizing speed and precision of this courier office. It gave me some hard times finding it, even though the image is so simple. That makes the logo very unique.

5. Make it Recognizable & Memorable.

It should be recognized by anyone. It’s the nice thing that everyone can easily recognize the logo.

Nike

Nike’s swoosh logo adores every sport’s related product that Nike manufactures worldwide. The majority of high-profile and extremely successful sports athletes proudly use and wear Nike products to retain the cutting-edge over the competition in their chosen sports. Tiger Woods the world’s best PGA Golfer has carried on the Nike legacy by endorsing the Nike line of golf related products and apparel, and has helped immortalized the Nike Swoosh Logo in the history books.

Coca-Cola

When it comes to soft drink beverages Coca-Cola has proven it to be a force to be reckoned with. Through brilliant marketing and branding the Coca-Cola logo/trademark is instantly recognized throughout countries around the world. The company’s attractive logo instantly reminds consumers that there is a crisp, refreshing, sweet beverage awaiting them in each and every sip.

6. Costumer’s Choice.

Let the owner choose with your proposed logo designs.

After making the designs you should have 2-3 or more proposed designs for the costumer to choose for the best, and you should accept corrections and opinions for a better design.

7. Finishing Touch.

Shell Oil Company is the United States-based subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell, a multinational oil company (“oil major”) of Anglo Dutch origins, which is amongst the largest oil companies in the world. Approximately 22,000 Shell employees are based in the U.S. The head office in the U.S. is in Houston, Texas.

Shell Oil Company, including its consolidated companies and its share in equity companies, is one of America’s largest oil and natural gas producers, natural gas marketers, gasoline marketers and petrochemical manufacturers.

After the costumer making the choice finalize the design by following the opinion of the costumer and make the design more visible by improving the color and the graphics.

More Examples:

Burnt Finger BBQ!

Here are some examples of succesful logo designs for your inspiration:
