The design of your blog is based on the way you structure everything and the actual look. In this post I will talk only about the ways to improve your sidebar structure and make your blog more accessible to your visitors.

I will list here the most recommended WordPress plugins for your blog sidebar. You don’t have to use all of them, using all of them will create chaos in your blog and people will be annoyed. You should choose the ones you think that fits your needs and try to avoid the situation described bellow.

1. Subscription Options

Is a simple yet very useful plugin for beginner bloggers. This plugin will allow you to add the classical icons for subscription: twitter, rss feed and email of course effortless.

2. Alexa Ranking Plugin

The earnings from your website are pretty important, the most effective way of getting high profits from your website is of course by selling ad space. In order for advertisers to buy ad space, they need to see what’s your alexa rank and if they like it, they will buy ad space from your blog.

3. Twitter Blender

Is a wordpress plugin that displays twitter updates in a simple widget box in your sidebar. The Twitter blender also has an updates archive.

4.WordPress Newsletter Widget

WordPress double option widget bulk email plugin for newsletter subscription will allow users to subscribe to your newsletter and also you will be able to manage the subscriptions.

5. Recent Comments by Entry

As I believe you figured out, the Recent Comments by Entry plugin will display the latest comments and also the entry where they were posted.

6. Post videos and photo galleries

Helps you to easily maintain your media works and place them into your blog sidebar.

7. WP Carousel

WP Carousel is a plugin that create a carousel with a category’s posts, and you can put it anywhere on the sidebar or blog.

8.Ad Code Widget Plugin

This plugin helps you to easily maintain the ads you display in your sidebar and in your blog. It was created by Primo Themes and it supports any image format and also any size and also you can add HTML/JavaScript/IFrame/etc codes.

9. Login With Ajax

This is a pretty cool widget plugin that allows your blog members to login. Using the ajax technologies, “Login with Ajax” will improve the aspect of your login page and also will impress all of your members.

10. Visitors Map and Who’s Online Widget

This will display a cool who’s online widget and also you will be able to see where the user comes from by using this great geographical positioning system.

11. Twitter Bubble

Will display your twitter updates in a simple widget who has the shape and the design of a twitter page included in a cool twitter bubble.

12. Post Google Map

If the blog you own is a business one and you have to show people where they can find you, Google Map is always the best solution. Post Google Map will help you to do that effortless.

13. Simple Flickr Photos

Nowadays everyone has a Flickr account and everyone wants to share their photos with friends and why not will all internet users. Simple Flikr Photos allows you to add a Flickr widget with your latest added photos.

14. PayPal Donations Plugin

This is definitely a must have plugin for developers and people who are offering services for free. Paypal was always the best friend of this kind of people and it helps them everyday.

15. Collapsing Archive

Being able to collapse your archive will save you some useful space in your sidebar. Collapsing archive is the plugin you want for this, and it is based on javascript.

16. General Stats

General stats counts almost everything from users, number of posts, days, and adds a simple widget to display this stats.

17. Tag For Me

If you own multiple blogs or websites, Tag for me will help you to display your stats using their widget.

18. Flash Tag Cloud

Displays the tags into a very interesting and cool way. The tags you write more are of course bigger and the ones that you don’t are smaller. The plugin is using the action script programming and is very stable.

19. Page Spot

This actually lets you to configure multiple types of sidebar and choose which one to display.

20. WP FlashTime

Adds cool and flash clock. This will help you to improve the design and it will make your site more dynamic. The plugin also contains over 25 different clocks.

21. Quick Adsense

It is a flexible and easy to use Adsense management plugin. With quick adsense you will add and maintain your adsense ads in no-time.

22. Sidebar Tabs

Includes a widget which adds multiple functions displayed in other tabs.

23. iContact Widget

Add the iContact ‘Automatic Sign-up Form’ to your sidebar with this widget. Simply paste the code from the form you created in iContact into this widget. Your form will be converted into HTML (instead of Javascript, which takes more time to load).

24. Display Widget

Choose which widgets to display and which widgets to hide. You can also choose to do this on which page of your blog you want.

25. Visual Categories

This plugin enables you to build “category entries” which contain a link to the category and which may contain a link to the category’s feed, an image, the time stamp of when the category was last updated, and the current count of posts in the category.

26. TinyFeed

A simple ajax plugin that loads a micro feed on your sidebar.

27. Flash Mp3 Player

It displays a cool flash player in your blog sidebar. You will be able to choose which MP3 file to listen and is more like the youtube player.

28. Category and Page Icons

This obviously adds icons to your categories and pages links.

29. ThemeSwitch

Using this plugin will allow you to easily change the current theme of your blog.

30. Gallery Widget

Gallery Widget is a simple plugin that let you show the latest/random images of the wordpress media gallery inside a widget, directly in your templates (it is possible to choose some categories to be included/excluded) or in posts/pages using a shortcode (see faq on how to use them).

80. Feed Count – If you don’t like the default feedburner chicklet, use this handy plugin to add chicklet the look and feel like You want.

82. Add RSS – adds RSS feed to your template header for Firefox and other browsers to detect your additional RSS feeds. Feeds are not excluded to local RSS to your site. For example you can add your Twitter or Pownce feed just as easily as adding your comments feed.

83. NextGEN Gallery – really great and automated image, portfolio related plugin with a simple and easy administration back end to handle multiple galleries. If You are designer, nice solution to handle Your portfolio images easily and in modern way.

84. Featured Content Gallery – fully automated featured slideshow gallery, this plugin is pretty popular using in blogs.

85. Post Thumb Revisited – The plugin scan posts for images. It has following features as loop display: show a thumbnail linked to the post and sidebar display: it can shows thumbnails from the most recent posts or thumbnails from random posts. Pretty handy plugin!

86. Flickr Photo Album – Plugin will allow you to pull in your Flickr photosets and display them as albums on your WordPress site. There is a pretty simple template provided which you can customize to 100% match the look and feel of your own site.

87. flickrRSS – This plugin allows you to easily display Flickr photos on your site. It supports user, set, favorite, group and community photostreams. The plugin is relatively easy to setup and configure via an options panel. It also has support for an image cache located on your server. Check out with is better for You.

88. LightBox – Used to overlay images on the current page.

89. Lightview – Similar to Lightbox yet superior to Lightbox. Since version 2.0, Lightview has been able to overlay not only images but also videos, iframed webpages, and almost anything! It works with all popular browsers. *this plugin is no longer free, but You can download trial version.

90. WordPress Flash Photo Carousel – This plugin is built to manage the excellent flShow Photo Carousel within the comfort of the WordPress dashboard. Add this plugin, to get really unique image presentation in Your blog.

91. WP-DB-Backup – Plugin allows you easily to backup your core WordPress database tables. You may also backup other tables in the same database.

92. WP-PhpMyAdmin – use this plugin to access Your MySql database right from Your WordPress admin panel!

Archive Plugins

93. Link Harvest – This plugin will go through all of your posts and pages and compile a list of all external links. Then it will create a linkroll for you based on your actual linking activity. You can have a full page display (like I do) or a little sidebar display. This is a complicated plugin, make sure you read the README. Not really archive plugin – but do similar job.

94. SRG Clean Archives – This plugin is designed to display your archive listings in a clean and uniform fashion that’s Search Engine friendly on a dedicated page or in your sidebar.

95. Articles – This plugin allows you to easily present a list of posts you select outside of your blog chronology. Very useful for featuring things that might otherwise slip into the nether regions of your archives.

96.Extended Live Archive – yet another archive plugin – choose from the list to find out one that suits best for Your needs.

Speed Up Your Blog!

97. WP Super Cache – This plugin generates static html files from your dynamic WordPress blog. After a html file is generated your webserver will serve that file instead of processing the comparatively heavier and more expensive WordPress PHP scripts.

104. WP E-Commerce – plugin is a state-of-the-art e-Commerce platform with a focus on aesthetics, web standards and usability. It is both free and priceless at the same time.

105. Theme Switcher – Allows your readers to switch among installed themes. Great if You sell or just offer theme and want to preview it for visitors.

Search Related Plugins

106. Search Everything – Search Everything increases the ability of the default WordPress Search, with 12 different searching methods.

107. Google Ajax Search – Using this WordPress plugin you can add Google AJAX Search to your site. Included by default is a Blog Search, Web Search and a secondary site search ideally for your flickr or other photostream.

108. Flexible Upload – Plugin for WordPress intended to extend WordPress basic upload functionality with really great features.

109. Download Monitor – Plugin for uploading and managing downloads, tracking download hits, and displaying links.

112. All in One SEO Pack – Optimizes your WordPress blog for Search Engines, really great one – must have plugin in every blog!

113. HeadSpace2 – It is an all-in-one meta-data manager that allows you to fine-tune the SEO potential of your site. Visit the HeadSpace page for a video demonstration.

114. Robots Meta – There’s no easy way to add meta robots tags to WordPress pages, unless of course, when you install this plugin.

115. SEO Friendly Images – WordPress optimization plugin which automatically updates all images with proper ALT and TITLE attributes. If your images do not have ALT and TITLE already set, SEO Friendly Images will add them according the options you set. Additionally this makes the post W3C/xHTML valid as well. ALT attribute is important part of search engine optimization. It describes your image to search engine and when a user searches for a certain image this is a key determining factor for a match. TITLE attribute play lesser role but is important for visitors as this text will automatically appear in the tooltip when mouse is over the image.

116. Enforce www. Preference – Plugin will help to preserve all your permalinks, enforcing www and no-www as one domain (http://example.com/ vs. http://www.example.com/).  Most search engines treat those addresses as two different domains.

117. WassUp – New WordPress plugin to track your visitors in real time. It has a very readable and fancy admin console to keep tracks of your blog’s users visits. It has a “current visitors online” view and a more detailed “visitors details” view where you can know almost everything your users are doing on your blog, it’s very useful for SEO or statistics maniacs.

Poll Plugins

118. WP-Polls -  Extremely customizable via templates and css styles and there are tons of options for you to choose to ensure that WP-Polls runs the way you wanted. It now supports multiple selection of answers.

119. Polldaddy – Not really WordPress plugin, but can be used in blogs and this one is really good looking and highly customizable. You need to register in order to use it.

Standalone Contact Form Plugins

120. cformsII – contact form – Highly customizable, flexible and powerful form builder plugin, covering a variety of use cases and features from attachments to multi form management, you can even have multiple forms on the same page. Lovely one!

121. Contact Form 7 -  Can manage multiple contact forms, plus you can customize the form and the mail contents flexibly with simple markup. The form supports Ajax-powered submitting, CAPTCHA, Akismet spam filtering and so on.

122. Secure and Accessible PHP Contact Form – Powerful and easy-to-install contact form offering many accessibility, usability, and security features.

Other Plugins

123. TDO Mini Forms – This plugin allows you to add highly customizable forms to your website that allows non-registered users and/or subscribers (also configurable) to submit posts. The posts are kept in “draft” until an admin can publish them (also configurable). It can optionally use Akismet to check if submissions are spam. TDO Mini Forms can be used to create “outside-the-box” uses for WordPress, from Contact Managers, Ad Managers, Collaborate Image Sites, etc.

124. Sideblog – plugin for WordPress Blog Platform. It is one way offering  a series of “short” posts, 1-2 sentences inlength. This plugin is becoming more and more popular in these days.

125. AJAX Calendar – if You use calendar in Your blog, use this plugin that will display an AJAXified WordPress calendar. This enhances the functionality of the standard calendar by allowing the asynchronous navigation of months, without updating the page, adding a drop-down list of post titles in each month (through the «-» button) and full caching support to reduce server load.

126. Event Calendar – Manage future events as an online calendar. Display upcoming events in a dynamic calendar, on a listings page, or as a list in the sidebar. You can subscribe to the calendar from iCal (OSX) or Sunbird. Choose one WordPress category as the ‘event’ category, and then add posts for dates in the future. Add the calendar or event list functions to your template, or just use the ‘Event Category’ page to list your forthcoming events.

Wowzio – And lastly I found this amazing site, with 5 really unique plugins, You could use in Your blog. I’ll look over just one plugin here, because on their site is very good explaining and demo about each plugin. However You must register to their site in order to use those plugins. Live activity feed – Plugin shows a real- time list of Your blog’s latest visitors showing where they came from  – country and reference site, and also which post they are reading. It’s great way to get visitor’s interest in other popular articles the people are reading. You can see the screenshot below.

1. WordPress.com Stats – Installing this stats plugin is much like installing Akismet, all you need is to put in your API Key and the rest is automatic. Once it’s running it’ll begin collecting information about your pageviews, which posts and pages are the most popular, where your traffic is coming from, and what people click on when they leave. It’ll also add a link to your dashboard which allows you to see all your stats on a single page. Less is more.

2. Ozh’ Admin Drop Down Menu – The lazy and the productive will love it : all admin links available in a neat CSS driven drop down menu. No need to click on “Manage” then “Pages” to edit pages, go to any admin page from any admin page. Demo Page

3. WordPress Automatic upgrade – Plugin allows a user to automatically upgrade the WordPress installation to the latest one provided by wordpress.org using the 5 steps provided in the WordPress upgrade instructions.

4. Redirection – It is a WordPress plugin to manage 301 redirections, keep track of 404 errors, and generally tidy up any loose ends your site may have. This is particularly useful if you are migrating pages from an old site, or are changing the directory of your WordPress installation.

5. AJAXed WordPress – This is an extremely powerful plugin that harnesses the power of AJAX and WordPress to improve the user experience, the administration capabilities and the design potential of any WordPress based blog.

6. PageMash – Customize the order your pages are listed in and manage the parent structure with this simple Ajax drag-and-drop administrative interface with an option to toggle the page to be hidden from output. Great tool to quickly re-arrange your page menus.

7. 404 Notifier – This plugin logs 404 hits on your WordPress powered site and will notify you of them via e-mail or in an RSS feed.

8. MyFTP WordPress Plugin – File management Plugin for WordPress that enables a blog administrator to (much like an FTP client) navigate folders and files on the server where their WordPress installation is hosted. The administrator can then edit, delete or upload files on the fly from within the WordPress administration panel. It is also possible to create new folders and upload complete directory structures.

9. Advanced Category Excluder – This plugin was born because there was a no other real alternative to enable CMS like functionality in WordPress. The main goal was, to enhance WordPress’s functionalities, to hide some unwanted categories, from defined parts of the blog.

10. The Google Analytics for WordPress -  Plugin automatically tracks and segments all outbound links from within posts, comment author links, links within comments, blogroll links and downloads. It also allows you to track Adsense clicks, add extra search engines, track image search queries and it will even work together with Urchin.

11. Clean Options – Plugin for cleaning up Your blog, after installing and removing plugins.

12. Admin Favicon – Simple favicon manager, letting You just add link to Your image You want to be favicon – and that’s it. Use it happily ever after.

13. Lighter Menus -  Creates drop-down menus instead of the regular admin menus of the WordPress interface, so that you can browse items with one click and work at your blog in a much more usable environment.Fast to load, adaptable to color schemes, Lighter Menus comes with silk icons by famfamfam, a option page, and a design that fits within the WordPress interface taking the less room possible.

14. Better Comments Manager – is an extension of the default WordPress comments manager. Really useful extension with two great features added to default WordPress manager – reply to comment from within WordPress Admin Panel and You can view all comments based by posts – very handy!

15. Plugin Manager – Lets you to view, download and install plugins from wordpress.org from an AJAX’ed interface, instead of manually downloading, extracting and uploading each plugin.

16. WP Admin Bar – An indispensable WordPress plugin which displays links to the Administration Panel at the top of a blog’s page – but only for users who are logged in and have permission to view the given functions.

17. Fluency Admin – Another interface for WordPress, choose between Ozh’ Admin interface plugin or this.

18. Broken Link Checker – This plugin is will monitor your blog looking for broken links and let you know if any are found, with many small features.

19. TinyMCE Advanced – This handy little plugin adds 40 extra buttons & options to the toolbar, which is now two rows plus one hidden row. When You get used to it becomes really handy to use. Check out all of plugin’s features in their site.

20. AJAX CSS Switcher – This WordPress Plugin allows you to add CSS switching to your theme without any reload. It also stores the users selection for future visits. This plugin uses UDASS The Unobtrusive Degradable Ajax Style Sheet Switcher. So if You want to add Your WordPress different color schemes and visual looks, just use this plugin.

21. Manageable – A WordPress plugin that allows for inline editing of the date, title, author, categories, tags, status and more on both posts and pages without leaving the “Manage” admin sections. No need to load each post or page individually.  Simply double-click anywhere in the post or page row and when you’re done, press enter.  Alternately, you can click the link in the new “Edit” column.

22. Search Regex – Adds a powerful set of search and replace functions to WordPress. These go beyond the standard searching capabilities, and allow you to search and replace almost any data stored on your site. In addition to simple searches you have the full power of PHP’s regular expressions at your disposal. Why would you want this? The primary reason for the plugin was to aid in relocating directories. It’s a real pain to manually go through every post and change image directory names. With this plugin all that was required was a simple search and replace pattern, and the job was finished in a few seconds.

23. Dashboard Editor – This plugin allows you to add whatever you want to the WordPress dashboard through PHP and HTML even Sidebar Widgets. You can also wipe the entire dashboard or individually remove some of the more irritating sections like the Dev news, Planet WordPress and the getting started section.

24. Advanced Category Excluder – This plugin was born because there was a no other real alternative to enable CMS like functionality in WordPress. The main goal was, to enhance WordPress’s functionalities, to hide some unwanted categories, from defined parts of the blog. Also if You use Featured Slideshow gallery, useful to hide Slideshow category.

Post Related Plugins

25. Similar Posts – This plugin displays a list of posts which are related or similar to the current post.

26. Code Markup – this is a WordPress plugin that makes it easy to include program code samples in your posts. You can even include HTML markup in the code sample; Code Markup magically knows which characters should be displayed as code and which should be rendered as HTML.

27. Popularity Contest – This plugin will help you see which of your posts are most popular. Views, comments, etc. are tracked and given configurable point values to determine popularity.

28. WP Email – Allows people to recommend/send your WordPress blog’s post/page to a friend.

29. WP Since Last Visit – Shows the number of new posts and comments (including indicators showing what posts and comments are new) since a visitor last came to your blog.

30. WP Page Navi – Adds a more advanced paging navigation your WordPress blog. Must have!

31. WP Print – Displays a printable version of your WordPress blog’s post/page, so people could print just Your post without advertisements and sidebars.

32. WP Post Rating – Adds an AJAX rating system for your WordPress blog’s post/page.

33. WP Sticky – Adds a sticky post feature to your WordPress’s blog, handy to stick featured post or just put there information so new visitors could know what Your site is about.

From the write post page, you can also get suggestions for tags using the Yahoo! keyword suggestion service.Once you’ve got your tags entered; you enter a realm of interesting ways of doing things with your tags. At the complicated end, AJAXy search is included with the download (it may need some customization to match your theme). At the simpler end, you can automatically have tags included at the top and bottom of your posts without making changes to themes.

38. WP Cumulus – it allows you to display your site’s tags, categories or both using a Flash movie that rotates them in 3D. It works just like a regular tags cloud, but is more visually exciting.

39. Simple Tags – is the successor of Simple Tagging Plugin this is really good tool to manage perfect your WP 2.3 and 2.5 tags, with many features.

40. Category Cloud Widget – The Category Cloud Widget is a widget that displays your categories as a tag cloud in your sidebar.

41. Recommended Tags – really useful plugin with main feature recommending and displaying list of Your  current tags to avoid similar tag duplication for example “plugin” or “plugins” – very useful.

42. Random Tags Cloud – Displays your tags by selecting randomly. Of course, you can customize other tag cloud’s settings.

Comment Related Plugins

43. Subscribe to Comments – this is a robust plugin that enables commenters to sign up for e-mail notification of subsequent entries. The plugin includes a full-featured subscription manager that your commenters can use to unsubscribe to certain posts, block all notifications, or even change their notification e-mail address!

44. Delink Comment Author – This plugin gives you the ability to remove the link a commenter left as their URL without removing the entire comment. A link to do this is added to your new comment e-mail notifications and to the comments list in your admin area.

45. Old Post Alert – This plugin shows a “this is old” banner in the comments form when a post is more than a month old. It may help cut down on irrelevant comments on old posts.

46. NoFollow Free – Removes the “nofollow” attribute from your wordpress blog’s comments (precisely from the author’s links) and/or from the comments text links and it inserts (if you want) an image band at the top of your pages with the phrase: “NOFOLLOW FREE”. It’s useful to encourage people to comment Your posts.

47. Comment Relish – WordPress plugin developed to send an e-mail message to users who comment on your website who have never commented before. The message dispatched to the user is defined within the plugin’s preferences. Numerous tags have been integrated to allow for information to be included in the message easily (I.E.: timestamp, author name, comment, etc.).

48. WP Grins – Plugin will provide clickable smilies for both the post form in the admin interface and the comments form of your blog.

49. wp-chunk – WordPress plugin to gracefully shorten URLs within submitted comments. It does not affect urls within posts, just comments.

50. CommentLuv – Pass a bit of luv onto your commenters by providing a titled link to their last blog post. This plugin attempts to parse the feed of the comment author by visiting their site and looking for their feed while they type their comment and appends it once they submit.
